German judo twins Mascha and Seija Ballhaus missed out on podium finishes at the World Judo Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, both settling for fifth place in their respective weight classes after dropping their bronze-medal matches.
Baku World Championships Play Out Bitter Finishes for Ballhaus Twins
Competing at the international tournament in Baku, 26-year-old sisters Mascha and Seija Ballhaus reached the medal rounds in their divisions before falling just short of securing hardware for the German team. Mascha Ballhaus, fighting in the 52-kilogram weight class, advanced through the bracket on Monday to face high-level competition, including an encounter with Olympic champion Uta Abe of Japan. After a grueling day on the tatami, both sisters dropped their respective bronze-medal bouts to finish in fifth place.
Mascha Ballhaus Pushes Olympic Champion Abe Before Late Penalties
In the quarterfinals of the 52-kilogram category, Mascha Ballhaus squared off against Japan’s Uta Abe, who won gold at the Tokyo Olympic Games and rarely tastes defeat in international competition. The German competitor caught Abe with a sharp throw that nearly secured an ippon for a sudden victory. Because Abe landed partially off her back, officials awarded a waza-ari for a half-point instead. With just four seconds remaining in regulation, Ballhaus collected her third penalty, resulting in a loss. She subsequently dropped her bronze-medal contest to miss out on the podium.
Reflecting on the outcome on social media, Mascha Ballhaus addressed the narrow defeat. “Naturally it hurts,” she wrote on Instagram. “Being so close to the podium and knowing that you gave everything you had is not easy. But this day also reminded me again why I love judo so much. I proved to myself that I can throw any opponent in the world. I just have to believe in myself.”
Seija Ballhaus Falls in Semifinals and Reaches Fifth Place
Seija Ballhaus experienced a parallel trajectory in her bracket after winning three matches. She advanced to the semifinal round, where she was defeated by a competitor from Georgia. Pushed into the bronze-medal match, she faced an opponent from Serbia and dropped the encounter. Earlier in the tournament, Seija demonstrated her ground skills by defeating China’s Nan Wang via a skilled stranglehold submission to win the fight early. Despite the final losses, the twins leave Baku with indicators of global competitiveness as the cycle toward the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles continues.
