Baku Quarterfinal Exit For Sarah Ischt
Ischt, representing Wolfsburg, opened her campaign in Azerbaijan’s capital with a pair of wins that propelled her into the quarterfinal round.
Coaching Assessment and National Team Outlook
Despite missing the podium, national head coach Claudiu Pusa offered an encouraging appraisal of the performance. “Sarah has fought four matches today and won two of them. She has by no means disappointed.”
The German Judo Federation arrived in Baku with nine female athletes across the weight categories, leaving only the heavyweight division above 100 kilograms unpopulated. The men’s squad features two competitors in individual events, alongside three additional athletes designated exclusively for the mixed team competition scheduled for the final Sunday of the championships.

World Championships as an Olympic Milestone
The tournament in Baku serves as a significant marker on the qualification pathway toward the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Azerbaijan’s capital is hosting the world championships for the second time, having previously welcomed the global event in 2018. During the 2018 championships in Baku, the German Judo Federation secured a single bronze medal courtesy of then-titleholder Alexander Wieczerzak. More recently at the 2025 World Championships in Budapest, the German squad collected one silver and three bronze medals.
Championship Schedule and Upcoming Bouts
Competition at the World Judo Championships in Baku continues throughout the week, featuring individual weight class eliminations before concluding with the mixed team event on Sunday, corresponding to the midpoint of the four-year cycle leading to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
