The Houston Astros hired St. Louis Cardinals assistant general manager and scouting director Randy Flores as their new general manager on October 31, 2026. The appointment ends a two-month front office search following the August departure of Dana Brown and sets the stage for a critical offseason managerial search.
Randy Flores Takes Over as Houston General Manager After Long Search
The Houston Astros announced on Friday evening that Randy Flores will become the 15th general manager in franchise history. The hiring concludes a search that began on August 24 when the club and former general manager Dana Brown mutually agreed to part ways. During the interim period, owner Jim Crane and Hall of Fame special advisor Jeff Bagwell oversaw baseball operations alongside the team’s assistant general managers.
Flores arrives in Houston after spending the past 11 seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals front office, including an eight-year run as assistant general manager of amateur and pro acquisition. He originally joined the Cardinals as scouting director in August 2015.

Randy has had a huge impact on the Cardinals over the last 10 seasons. Throughout the entire interview process, we’ve been thoroughly impressed with Randy and with his background in scouting and player acquisition. We’re happy to welcome Randy and his family to the Astros and we can’t wait to get to work on bringing another championship to Houston.

The swift resolution on Friday came together just a day after Milwaukee Brewers assistant GM Matt Kleine had emerged as the front-runner for the position. Negotiations with Kleine stalled over financial terms and the potential scope of the title before the Astros turned their focus to Flores, according to reporting from The Athletic.
St. Louis Drafting Success and the Cardinals Connection
Flores ran St. Louis drafts starting in 2025 and built a reputation for identifying talent in the middle rounds of the amateur draft. His notable selections with the Cardinals include Tommy Edman in the sixth round and Lars Nootbaar in the eighth round. He also drafted players such as Nolan Gorman, Jordan Walker, Masyn Winn, Dylan Carlson, Brendan Donovan, Alec Burleson, and Zac Gallen.

Before his front office career, Flores pitched as a left-handed reliever across parts of eight Major League seasons from 2002 to 2010. He played for the Texas Rangers, Colorado Rockies, St. Louis Cardinals, and Minnesota Twins, finishing his playing career with an 11-5 record, a 4.61 ERA, and 202 strikeouts over 250 innings. He won a World Series ring out of the Cardinals’ bullpen in 2006, throwing 5 2/3 scoreless postseason innings during that championship run.
Following his retirement from playing, Flores earned a master’s degree in education at the University of Southern California, coached the Trojans’ pitchers in 2013, called college games for ESPN and the Pac-12 Networks, and founded OnDeck Digital, a video scouting technology company.
Roster Realities and the Urgent Search for a New Manager
Flores takes over a club that reached the postseason for the ninth time in 10 years but encountered unusual struggles this past season. Houston finished the regular season with an 81-81 record, securing the American League West title by a single game over the Texas Rangers. The team became the first big league club in a full season to reach the playoffs with a sub-.500 record before the Chicago White Sox swept them in two games during the Wild Card Series at Daikin Park.

The immediate priority on Flores’ desk is filling the managerial vacancy left when the franchise let Joe Espada go on October 14 after three seasons. Espada compiled a 256-229 record with two division titles, but his postseason teams went 0-4.
The new general manager faces a roster balancing act under Jim Crane’s win-now mandate. While the team features standout talent led by likely American League MVP Yordan Alvarez, several core veterans carry large contracts, and MLB.com ranked the farm system 29th out of 30 teams in August.
Flores and Crane are scheduled to address the media during an introductory press conference at 10 a.m. Monday in the press conference room at Daikin Park.
