Alexander Zverev Defeats Alex de Minaur to Reach Shanghai Masters Semifinals

Alexander Zverev defeated Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-4 on October 15 at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, advancing to the tournament semifinals for the third time in his career and his first in seven years. The top-seeded German converted crucial breaks in both sets and defended all five break points he faced during the straight-sets victory on the outdoor hard courts in China.

Breaking Through to the Semifinals in Shanghai

Zverev arrived at the ATP Masters 1000 event as the world number two, playing the tournament for the fourth year and the eighth time overall. His previous best result at the venue came in 2019, when he finished as the runner-up.

In the quarterfinals, Zverev faced 27-year-old Australian Alex de Minaur, ranked ninth in the world. Zverev claimed the opening set by securing a break in the fifth game. He maintained that momentum in the second set, converting another break in the seventh game. Across the match, Zverev struck 24 winners while neutralizing every opportunity de Minaur created on his serve.

Top-10 Victories and Tactical Adjustments

The win marks Zverev’s third victory of the season against an opponent ranked inside the ATP top 10. Following the match, Zverev assessed his performance on the court, pointing to the baseline exchanges and high pace dictated by his opponent.

“I think it was a big step up,” Zverev told the Association of Tennis Professionals. “I don’t know the exact statistics, but just the feeling of playing the match and being on court, I think both of us played really well. I was hitting through the ball a lot more than Alex, but he is so fast and he likes the speed of this court, so it is difficult from the baseline. I felt good and I am happy that I could step up from my previous matches.”

Next Match Against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina

With the quarterfinal victory secured, Zverev advances to the semifinals to face 25th-seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain.
