Alexander Bublik battled through a bloody hand injury, a broken racket, and a first-set collapse to defeat American player Brandon Nakashima 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in a two-hour and 27-minute match at the Shanghai Masters. Ranked 22nd in the world, the Kazakh player secured the grueling victory on Sunday to advance to the next round of the Chinese tournament, according to La Nación.
A First-Set Collapse Sparks an On-Court Outburst
The early stages of the match saw Bublik build a commanding 6-4 lead in the opening tiebreak. When he failed to convert those set points and dropped the tiebreak 9-7 to the 19th-ranked Nakashima, his frustration boiled over. Bublik screamed, smashed his racket against the court, and kicked his sideline chair before striking the plastic lid of a player beverage cooler with his fist. The impact shattered the plastic into fragments, causing a deep cut and heavy bleeding on his right arm.
Tournament umpire John Blom called for a medical timeout, halting play while trainers attended to the bleeding. Despite the self-inflicted injury and the unexpected break in momentum, Bublik returned to the court without losing his tactical focus. He regrouped to dominate the second set 6-3, forcing a deciding third set against an opponent who refused to yield easy points.
Passing Shots Decide the Final Tiebreak
The third set mirrored the tightness of the opener, pushing both players into another high-pressure tiebreak. Bublik utilized a series of aggressive passing shots to break away from Nakashima in the closing stages. A standout running forehand passing shot hit nearly from the baseline gave the 29-year-old a 5-3 advantage, allowing him to close out the desempate 7-5 and seal the match.

Sunday’s win moves Bublik’s record for 2026 to 30 victories against 20 defeats. Earlier this year, he claimed an ATP title in January in Hong Kong and reached a career-high ranking of No. 10. He also finished as the runner-up at the Kitzbühel tournament in July.
Next Up: A Round of 16 Clash Against Alexander Zverev
Bublik advances to the round of 16 at the Shanghai Masters, where he is scheduled to face Alexander Zverev. The upcoming match carries physical uncertainty for both competitors. Zverev advanced to the fourth round by defeating France’s Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 6-3, but the world’s top-ranked player showed clear signs of discomfort in his ankle during that encounter.
For Bublik, the meeting with Zverev represents another step in his campaign to re-enter the top tier of men’s tennis after slipping from his peak ranking earlier in the season. The two players will meet on the hard courts in Shanghai following Zverev’s recovery assessment.
