AC Milan and Internazionale have unveiled a 2,3 miljard euro project to build the Generali Stadium, a 71,500-seat venue designed to replace the historic Stadio Giuseppe Meazza by the 2031–2032 Serie A season, Sporza reported. The announcement came during a presentation at the Castello Sforzesco, where club executives and architects detailed plans for a modern oval arena featuring tachtig ruitvormige elementen, a sweeping roof, and two steep tiers intended to enclose the pitch completely.
The Generali Stadium Replaces San Siro
The new venue takes its name from a twenty-year sponsorship agreement with the Italian insurance giant Generali worth 650 miljoen euro, according to VoetbalBelgie. Set to rise on the same site in Milan currently occupied by San Siro, the modern complex will also encompass a hotel and a shopping centre across a 281,000-square-foot urban development area that includes green spaces and pedestrian zones, NOS and VoetbalPrimeur.be reported. The overall project cost is estimated at 2,3 miljard euro, driven largely by the surrounding commercial infrastructure.

Architect Manica, whose firm partnered with Foster + Partners on the design, acknowledged the emotional weight of replacing a revered ground. “It is always a challenge to design a building that must replace a beloved predecessor,” Manica stated, adding that the goal was to capture the essence of San Siro in a contemporary structure. Despite those intentions, Serie A watcher Willem Haak expressed skepticism to Sporza regarding claims that the new arena preserves the traditional atmosphere, calling it commercial language rather than an accurate architectural tribute to the original venue’s iconic spiral towers.
Decades of Milan History Face Demolition
Opened in 1926, the current Stadio Giuseppe Meazza—universally known as San Siro—has hosted countless historic fixtures, including Feyenoord’s historic European Cup triumph in 1970, noted NOS. While the venue has undergone multiple renovations over the decades, the upper rings suffer from severely restricted concourse space, making it difficult for supporters on the third tier to access restrooms or concessions during matchdays, Sporza reported.

The push for a new home gained urgency not only from modern infrastructure demands and revenue potential but also from the requirements of the 2032 UEFA European Championship. Italy is co-hosting the tournament with Turkey, and Milan risk losing its host-city status if a modern stadium is not operational by then, according to Sporza and VoetbalBelgie.
Project Timelines and Upcoming Approvals
The timeline laid out by both Milanese clubs targets a construction start in 2028, with formal paperwork and administrative approvals scheduled for completion by June 2027, NOS reported. Construction is slated to finish ahead of the 2032 European Championship, allowing AC Milan and Inter to kick off their 2031–2032 home campaign in the new Generali Stadium.
