Nicki Vine confronted the intruders late Tuesday night after spotting them targeting equipment critical to her family’s livelihood.
Late-Night Security Alert in Dorset
The incident unfolded at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1, according to details published by the Daily Mail. Nicki Vine had recently returned home from a friend’s house at around 10:00 p.m. and had just finished a bath before relaxing in the lounge in a towel. When a neighbor’s security light triggered outside, she checked the property’s closed-circuit television monitor.
The footage showed a motorbike carrying two people driving past slowly before returning. One of the individuals dismounted, walked down the road, and approached the side door of a work van parked outside the home. The vehicle belonged to Nicki’s father, Darren Vine, who works alongside his daughter as a plasterer. Darren had been taking tools out of the vehicle and inadvertently left the side door unlocked.
Confrontation with a Baseball Bat
Realizing what was happening, Vine reacted immediately. “I got a little bit angry, that’s our livelihood,” Vine told reporters. “I ran outside with the bat in just my towel. The guy saw me and ran away. I threw the bat at him but it missed.”
Security camera footage captured Vine sprinting around the corner of the house, holding her bath towel with one hand while gripping a baseball bat in the other. The suspect—described as wearing tracksuit pants, trainers, and a padded jacket—bolted down the street upon seeing her approach.
Playing Chicken with the Getaway Moped
As the primary suspect fled on foot, an accomplice waiting on a motorbike prepared to leave the scene. Unfazed by her attire or the odds, Vine stepped directly into the roadway as the moped accelerated past.
“Then I heard the motorbike start up and stepped into the road to play chicken with it,” Vine said. “I remember shouting ‘come on then.’ He drove towards me and I had to step out of the way. I took a swing at him and I am pretty sure I hit the bike.”
The suspects escaped the immediate area following the confrontation. Upon returning indoors, Vine noted that the adrenaline wore off and she realized she was physically shaking from the encounter.
Community Response and Official Status
Vine later shared the security footage on social media, prompting widespread praise from neighbors and online commentators for her quick thinking and protective stance over her family’s equipment. She noted that the household had previously been targeted by vehicle thieves, hardening her resolve not to back down.

According to reports from both outlets, Dorset Police have been notified regarding the incident, and evidence from the home’s security system has been submitted for review. Authorities have not yet released additional details concerning suspects or ongoing searches as the investigation continues.
