Valentina Bonfanti Wins Medals in Deaf Judo and Gets Implants

Valentina Bonfanti, an Argentine judoka from El Calafate, has built an international career while competing with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, overcoming childhood bullying and academic hurdles before securing multiple global medals and undergoing a successful cochlear implant procedure in 2022.

Early Diagnosis and the Turn to Judo

Born in 2000 in El Calafate in the province of Santa Cruz, Bonfanti faced progressive hearing loss during her early childhood. Following a definitive diagnosis at age five, she attended primary school while dealing with episodes of bullying tied to her hearing disability. At nine years old, she discovered judo, a sport that altered her personal development and provided a shield against peer harassment.

“When I started judo there was a very big change directly, since I could show a certain authority and I was more respected, since no one messed with the girl who, quote-unquote, did judo,” the athlete recalled.

International Success on the Tatami

After completing secondary education, Bonfanti relocated to La Plata to study Kinesiology and Sports Physiatry at the Catholic University of La Plata. She balanced rigorous academic demands with high-performance training, earning a spot on the first delegation of the Argentine Deaf Judo Selection to compete at a world championship.

In 2021, she traveled to Versailles, France, and claimed her first bronze medal at a world championship for deaf judo. “We arrived in good shape after several training camps that we did at the CeNARD,” she noted prior to the trip. The following year, at the Deaflympics in Caxias do Sul, Brazil, she secured another bronze medal in the under-70 kilograms category. In 2025, she repeated the feat at the Deaflympics in Tokyo, capturing Argentina’s first judo medal of that edition.

Transitioning to Cochlear Implant Technology

For years, Bonfanti used traditional hearing aids in both ears. However, as her sensorineural hearing loss progressed, everyday communication grew increasingly difficult. The rising challenge of following conversations with friends and family created feelings of isolation and hesitation in university and athletic environments.

“Every day it cost me more to integrate into the conversation and be able to understand or follow a thread of conversation, whether with my friends, with my family. Each time I closed myself more and more because I was ashamed to have them repeat or have me explain the topic that had already passed again,” she explained.

Medical Support and Rehabilitation

Dr. Paula Ontivero guided Bonfanti through her medical evaluation and recommended a cochlear implant manufactured by Cochlear and distributed in Argentina by Tecnosalud. Following the surgical procedure in 2022 and six months of subsequent rehabilitation, Bonfanti experienced substantial improvements across her academic, athletic, and professional pursuits.

“I didn’t get lost in the university, I wasn’t ashamed to ask because I could follow a thread in the conversation. I could relate to more people outside my environment, so I think that was fundamental to improving both my academic, professional, and athletic performance,” Bonfanti stated.

Understanding Cochlear Implants

A cochlear implant is a medical device designed for individuals with severe or profound hearing loss who receive insufficient benefit from conventional hearing aids. While standard hearing aids merely amplify sound, a cochlear implant converts sound signals into electrical impulses that directly stimulate the auditory nerve, allowing the brain to interpret auditory information.

With her restored auditory access and ongoing athletic career, Bonfanti continues to train, compete, and practice as a kinesiologist. “I hope that cochlear implants can continue to help me in my daily life, especially to communicate better and be able to function with more security, both at a professional level and in sports,” she concluded.
