Vendsyssel Elite Badminton will withdraw its elite team from the Danish Badminton League, known as Badmintonligaen, following the conclusion of the upcoming 2026/2027 season, according to an announcement issued by the club’s board and its three parent clubs.
Board Decision Ends Two Decades in Elite Competition
The decision to pull out of the top flight was finalized by the board alongside the cooperative’s three parent clubs: Frederikshavn Badminton Klub, Skagen Badmintonklub, and Hjørring Badminton Klub. Vendsyssel Elite Badminton, commonly known as VEB, has competed continuously in Badmintonligaen since 2006. Over the past decade, the club established itself as a consistent top performer in Danish badminton, finishing every regular season among the top three teams and capturing national championship gold medals in 2022, 2023, and 2025.
VEB board chairman Jacob Juhl described the withdrawal as a painful milestone for everyone involved in the organization. According to Juhl, the club’s leadership and the underlying organizations spent time evaluating alternative operating structures before reaching the conclusion to step away while the team remains at the pinnacle of the sport.
Leadership Fatigue and Frustration With Governing Body
Elaborating on the rationale behind the shutdown, Juhl pointed to a combination of administrative burnout and strategic disagreements with the national sports administration. Running a competitive ligahold at the level maintained by VEB requires an immense amount of labor, and the current leadership team no longer possesses the necessary energy to sustain it, while the parent clubs face heavy demands managing their own local operations in Frederikshavn, Skagen, and Hjørring.
Furthermore, Juhl expressed sharp criticism toward Badminton Danmark, citing a lack of institutional ambition and engagement regarding the future of the premier league. Specifically, the chairman highlighted a recent proposal put forward by Badminton Danmark that outlined plans to reduce the presence of international star players within Badmintonligaen, a move that contributed heavily to the board’s disillusionment.
Current Season Preparations and Tributes
Despite the looming departure, club officials confirmed that the organization remains on a healthy trajectory for its final campaign. Club management briefed sponsors, players, and volunteers regarding the decision, finding unanimous agreement across the organization to commit fully to the upcoming schedule and push for another championship contention.
Juhl emphasized that the club stands on a solid financial and competitive foundation as it enters its final year. In statements provided to regional media outlets, the chairman extended deep gratitude to all individuals who fueled the cooperative’s historic run since its formation in 2002. Special recognition was directed toward long-serving former chairman Jan R. Jensen and his family, alongside head coach Allan Kolbro Nielsen—who has guided the squad for the past 12 seasons—as well as the players, trainers, sponsors, matchday volunteers, spectators, and the three parent clubs.
