Euroligue : Tony Parker s’offre une première victoire sur le banc de l’Asvel contre le Maccabi Tel-Aviv
Tony Parker secured his first victory on the bench of ASVEL, leading the French club to an 84-74 win over Maccabi Tel-Aviv at the LDLC Arena in Décines-Charpieu during the opening round of the EuroLeague.
The milestone win arrives after a difficult summer preparation phase for Villeurbanne, which faced budget and roster reductions alongside four friendly losses and a 73-71 defeat to Roanne in the LNB Supercup semifinals. Operating without the injured TyTy Washington due to an ankle issue, Parker turned to young prospects and veteran experience to steady the club’s European campaign.
Early Momentum and Fodzo Dada’s Breakthrough
Parker placed 19-year-old guard Marc-Owen Fodzo Dada into the starting lineup alongside Patty Mills. The teenager rewarded that trust immediately, opening the scoring with a three-point shot that ignited an 11-make first-half barrage from beyond the arc for the hosts.
ASVEL controlled the tempo through the opening two quarters, building a 10-point advantage at halftime (42-32) and stretching that margin to 15 points at 35-20 during the 17th minute. Jae Crowder, playing in the same jersey his father Corey wore 30 years prior, anchored the scoring effort alongside Mills and Fodzo Dada.
Maccabi’s Third-Quarter Charge
Maccabi Tel-Aviv erased the deficit coming out of the locker room, putting together a 10-0 run orchestrated by Yam Madar and Roman Sorkin. The visitors claimed a 51-49 advantage by the 24th minute after winning the third quarter 25-20.
Despite strong performances from Jaylen Hoard, who contributed 15 points, six rebounds, and three interceptions, alongside 13 points each from Sorkin and Madar, the Israeli side struggled with ball control. Maccabi committed 20 turnovers compared to ASVEL’s 15, ultimately undermining their comeback bid.
Late Surge and Decisive Shooting
ASVEL regained control late in the third frame behind forward Yves Pons, who sparked a decisive sequence with two offensive rebounds, two three-pointers, and a jump shot coupled with a foul to reclaim a 62-57 lead.
Crowder then scored seven consecutive points in the final period while locking down defensively against Hoard. The hosts maintained their advantage through superior outside shooting, finishing 16 of 34 from beyond the arc, well ahead of Maccabi’s clip on 7-of-29 shooting. Maccabi was superior on the boards with 38 rebounds to ASVEL’s 29, sealing the 22-17 fourth-quarter scoreline.
Standings Context and Upcoming Schedule
Following a good final game in the EuroLeague the previous season, the victory provides an immediate lift for Villeurbanne. However, the schedule grows tougher next week.
