Attorneys and university officials declined to discuss specific findings regarding individual conduct, citing personnel policies. In a Thursday interview with The Associated Press, The Assembly and WRAL of Raleigh, lead investigator and attorney Nate Huff along with UNC general counsel Paul Newton wouldn’t discuss detailed findings or conduct by specific individuals. But Huff confirmed his team probed allegations tied to potential drug use, inappropriate relationships and NCAA rule violations, and noted that they talked to the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach among a lengthy list of interviewees, stating: Our scope was broad, so we looked into a lot of stuff.
Bill Belichick cooperated fully with the probe while preparing his team for early-season matchups against TCU and East Tennessee State. The North Carolina Tar Heels began preparation for Week 2, just over a week after they beat TCU to open up the 2026 campaign, helping the program get off to a good start in the second year of the Bill Belichick era. Steve Belichick’s resignation becomes effective in late October, when his medical leave ends, according to UNC’s announcement reported by the Associated Press. His departure makes him the second high-profile resignation amid the probe, the other being general manager Michael Lombardi earlier this month on September 3. On Thursday, the day the probe concluded, WRAL was the only broadcast outlet invited by UNC lawyers to a limited briefing on the investigation, its origins and its conclusions.
