The selection marks the first roster named by the coaching staff since capturing the World Cup title last summer across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Four New Inclusions and Roster Changes for the UEFA Nations League
According to tournament announcements, Spain’s upcoming marathon stretch of four matches begins on September 26 against England at Wembley Stadium in London.
- Josep Martínez: The Inter Milan goalkeeper earns a call-up following an injury to Joan García, who suffered a right knee strain after slipping against Racing. Martínez previously debuted for Spain in June 2021 during an emergency fixture against Lithuania.
- Dean Huijsen: The Real Madrid central defender returns to the setup after missing out on the recent World Cup squad. His inclusion coincides with a positional reshuffle in the defensive line.
- Fermín: The Barcelona midfielder returns to international duty after missing the World Cup due to a foot injury sustained on the final matchday of the domestic league season. His return offsets the absence of club teammate Gavi, who has missed significant time following a knee scare in Elche.
- Roberto Fernández: The Espanyol forward leads the Spanish scoring charts for the Zarra Trophy and earns his first senior selection, winning out competition in the attacking third.
Defensive Adjustments Following International Retirement
The defensive unit required retooling after Marcos Llorente announced his international retirement on September 3, stepping down from the national team setup. To compensate on the right side of the defense, de la Fuente has shifted Eric García into a right-back role—mirroring the position where he has logged his minutes this club season—while incorporating Huijsen into the central defensive pool alongside mainstays such as Aymeric Laporte and Pau Cubarsí.
In the attacking positions, Roberto enters the fold to provide a fresh focal point for goals, replacing Borja Iglesias from the World Cup squad. The remainder of the squad retains familiar pillars, including Rodri, Martín Zubimendi, Pedri, Fabián Ruiz, and Mikel Merino in midfield, alongside wide threats Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal.
