Luis de la Fuente will remain at the helm of the Spain national football team through at least the 2030 FIFA World Cup, securing an extension that carries his tenure past his previous deal, according to announcements made by the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF).
The agreement was confirmed by RFEF president Rafael Louzán during an address at the World Football Summit in Madrid, following initial reports from RNE. While the contract terms are finalized and await final signatures from both parties, the extension guarantees that De la Fuente will lead La Roja when Spain co-hosts the 2030 tournament alongside Portugal and Morocco, defending the world title won in the summer of 2026.
A Historic Resumé Backed by Trophies
De la Fuente took charge of the senior men’s national team in December 2022, succeeding Luis Enrique. In the years since, he has accumulated three major international trophies: the 2023 UEFA Nations League, UEFA Euro 2024, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Those achievements make him the most decorated manager in the history of the Spanish national team, according to RFEF leadership.
Rafael Louzán pointed directly to those accomplishments when defending the decision to lock down the manager’s future. “Tenemos al mejor seleccionador de la historia, le avalan los resultados,” Louzán stated, emphasizing that the sporting metrics left no doubt about the direction of the program.
Beyond the silverware, the manager’s record includes a notable 38-match official unbeaten streak that stretches back across multiple qualification cycles and major tournaments, punctuated by a defensively stingy World Cup campaign where Spain conceded just a single goal across eight matches.
Financial Adjustments and Contract Terms
Under the impending new agreement, De la Fuente’s salary will see an upward adjustment. Louzán acknowledged publicly that the world champion coach had previously fallen outside the upper echelon of compensation for national team managers globally.

The RFEF president also hinted that the partnership might stretch beyond the 2030 tournament cycle, remarking that the relationship could potentially continue “quizá algo más,” though no formal commitments have been tabled for timelines past the upcoming decade’s home World Cup.
Looking Ahead to Upcoming Competitions
Before attention turns fully toward co-hosting duties in 2030, De la Fuente faces a crowded calendar of competitive fixtures. Spain enters the next cycle of the UEFA Nations League with an upcoming squad selection announcement slated for Friday, setting off a four-match group stage block.
The team must also navigate qualification paths for Euro 2028, which will be hosted across the United Kingdom and Ireland. At 65 years old, De la Fuente retains the responsibility of managing a generational transition, leaning heavily on young foundational talents such as Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal to maintain Spain’s competitive edge on the global stage.
