Michael Arroyo Reaches the Big Leagues After Stellar Triple-A Stint
The 21-year-old prospect is not on the Mariners’ 40-man roster, which is full, so they will have to make room for the 21-year-old, Daniel Kremer of MLB.com reports. His promotion follows recent call-ups for fellow prospects left-hander Kade Anderson on August 20 and outfielder Lazaro Montes on August 30, marking the third significant prospect promotion for the team in the past couple of weeks.
The Mariners selected Arroyo’s contract from Triple-A Tacoma, and he’ll start at second base and bat eighth Sunday against the Athletics. While he has spent considerable time learning left field this season to accommodate other prospects in the middle infield—such as second baseman Cole Young and shortstop Colt Emerson, who are expected to serve as the Mariners’ double-play tandem for the long haul—the team deployed him at his natural keystone position for his first major league appearance.
Offensive Production and Scouting Profile
The young infielder earned his promotion through strong production across the minor leagues. Arroyo opened the campaign with Double-A Arkansas before being promoted to Triple-A in early July, posting an .830 OPS with 18 home runs and 17 steals in 114 games between the two levels. In his first taste of Triple-A action this year, he slashed .277/.353/.490 (109 wRC+) with eight home runs, four stolen bases, an impressive 16.2% strikeout rate in 235 plate appearances, an 8.1% walk rate, and made contact at an 80% clip.
Scouts and analysts view him as one of the game’s rising talents. Keith Law of The Athletic (No. 54), MLB Pipeline (No. 56) and FanGraphs (No. 69) agree that Arroyo is among the game’s 70 best farmhands, though Baseball America omitted him from its latest top 100. Law contends that Arroyo’s excellent contact skills
could help him develop into a quality offensive second baseman in the bigs.
International Pedigree and Long-Term Defensive Versatility
Arroyo signed with the Mariners in 2022 for $1.375MM – the largest bonus ever given to a prospect from Colombia. He spent his first three years with the organization in the infield, primarily the keystone. However, with second baseman Cole Young and shortstop Colt Emerson expected to serve as the Mariners’ double-play tandem for the long haul, they have given Arroyo quite a bit of time in left field this season, combining for 66 starts there between the Double-A and Triple-A levels before Sunday’s promotion. The 5-foot-10, 160-pounder can be moved around by the floundering Mariners—who are desperate for offense—to get his bat in the lineup.
By adding Arroyo to their 40-man roster, the Mariners will keep him out of the Rule 5 draft in the winter.
