Italian football legend Sandro Mazzola has died at the age of 83, according to reports from Italian media and sports clubs. As a cornerstone of both Inter Milan and the Italy national team, Mazzola forged a legacy defined by domestic dominance and European triumphs.
An Inter Milan Icon Across Generations
Inter Milan shared a statement on social media mourning the loss of their historic forward, noting that some people write history while others become history itself. According to club records, Mazzola made 567 appearances for Inter, scoring 161 goals across all competitions, including 116 strikes in Serie A. During his career in Milan, he secured four league titles and hoisted the European Cup twice.
‘Mazzola is a symbol of his time,’ Inter wrote in their public tribute, highlighting his ability to bridge generations and ignite the passions of supporters. Known distinctively on the pitch as the star with the mustache, Mazzola shared a final wish to be remembered simply as a good person who fought even when success seemed impossible.
A Storied Football Dynasty
Sandro Mazzola came from a football family. His father, Valentino Mazzola, was a star player and prolific goalscorer for Torino. Sandro lost his father at a young age when Valentino died in a plane crash at just 30 years old. Sandro’s brother, Ferruccio Mazzola, also pursued a professional football career, playing at a lower level than his father and brother.
On the international stage, Sandro represented Italy. He helped lead Italy to European Championship glory and reached the World Cup final, where Italy lost to Brazil. In 1971, Mazzola finished second in the Ballon d’Or voting, finishing behind Johan Cruijff.
European Heartbreak and Later Matches
While Mazzola tasted European Cup success with Inter, he also experienced defeats on the continent. In 1972, he played the entirety of the final in Rotterdam, where Inter lost 2-0 to Ajax.
News of Mazzola’s passing follows closely behind the death of another Italian football icon, AC Milan legend Franco Baresi, plunging the nation’s football community into a period of mourning. Italian media report that all Serie A matches in the current round of fixtures will be preceded by a minute of silence to honor Mazzola. Inter return to action this weekend with an away fixture against AS Roma.
