Germany and the rest of Europe are facing a severe water deficit that has worsened significantly over recent months. Joint scientific research points to rising temperatures and increased evaporation as the primary culprits behind the strain, rather than any permanent decline in rainfall.

Rising Heat Evaporates Germany’s Water Reserves

Data compiled through collaborative monitoring by the Helmholtz-Zentrum für Geoforschung (GFZ) in Potsdam, NASA, and the German Aerospace Center indicates that vital water reservoirs face severe strains that may persist well into the winter months.

Evaporation Outpaces Rain as Temperatures Climb

Assessments from the GFZ show that total water content located both on and beneath the Earth’s surface has dropped notably. Researchers attribute the worsening deficit to a steady rise in potential evaporation caused by higher air temperatures, which pull greater quantities of moisture from the ground directly into the atmosphere.

Data shared by a GFZ spokesperson notes that precipitation records show no long-term negative trend in overall rainfall amounts, clarifying that rain scarcity is not the main driver of the current crisis.

Instead, climbing temperatures intensify moisture loss from soils and surface bodies. Annette Eicker, head of the Global Geomonitoring and Gravity Field section at the GFZ, pointed out that Germany has experienced progressively drier conditions since 2015 compared to the preceding 15-year window. While a wet year in 2024 provided a temporary boost to regional water storage, it was quickly followed by a sharp downward trend.

Subterranean Basins Struggle to Replenish

The continuous drop in groundwater levels accounts for the vast majority of the long-term decline in German water storage.

Scientific teams remain particularly cautious regarding recent seasonal data. According to the GFZ, measurements recorded up to June have not yet fully captured the impacts of the summer’s intense heatwaves. Researchers expect the full extent of those high-temperature episodes to register once comprehensive data becomes available later in the autumn.

Winter Recovery Unlikely Despite Seasonal Rains

Projections for the remainder of the year remain concerning. A GFZ spokesperson stated that scientists fear regional water storage facilities will fail to recover by the end of the year, even if autumn brings higher-than-average rainfall totals.
