Eight players with ties to Toyama Prefecture expect to hear their names called as the Nippon Professional Baseball draft opens on October 22, led by high-velocity arms from local high schools, universities, and independent league standouts. The annual selection meeting brings heightened attention to regional talent as scouts finalize their evaluations across the prefecture.
Takaoka First Pitcher Yuta Maeda Draws Eleven Club Scouts
Among the top prospects anticipated to be selected early is left-handed pitcher Yuta Maeda of Takaoka First High School, who features a fastball topping out at 156 kilometers per hour. Standing 173 centimeters tall, the left-hander generates velocity through exceptional shoulder blade flexibility. Representatives from 11 NPB clubs recently visited a practice game to evaluate his mechanics.
“My current goal is to become an ace-like presence representing that team and lead them to victory,” Maeda said regarding his aspirations ahead of the draft.
Standing 189 centimeters, Kawajiri has added 18 kilometers per hour to his fastball since his high school days, reaching a top speed of 158 kilometers per hour.
“I will do my best so that I can be selected in the first round, so thank you for your support,” Kawajiri said.
Meanwhile, the Toyama Grn Thunderbirds independent league team aim to send a player to NPB for the ninth year. Slugger Koki Nemoto, originally from Fukushima Prefecture, has drawn inquiry forms from nine professional clubs. Nemoto experienced a university league championship with his former college team before leaving due to family circumstances, ultimately landing in Toyama. Scouts note his aggressive hitting approach and defensive versatility across the outfield.
“My baseball life has not always been full of good things, but I am proud of having overcome difficult and painful times to get this far, and now I am just waiting to be drafted,” Nemoto said.
Additional Toyama Arms Expected on Draft Boards
Scouts are also monitoring right-handed sidearmer Shuya Nishio, whose fastball reaches 149 kilometers per hour, alongside pitcher Fuga Asage, who delivers fastballs touching 153 kilometers per hour. Both pitchers round out the group of eight regional prospects anticipating selection as NPB teams submit their final roster decisions.
Toyama Grn Thunderbirds players have entered the professional ranks in each of the past nine drafts.
