RASTA Vechta kassierte am Donnerstagabend in der easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga eine 67:108-Niederlage gegen die Bamberg Baskets und zahlte damit den Preis für die anstrengende vorherige Woche.
Playing before 2,922 fans at the RASTA Dome, head coach Christian Held’s squad struggled with fatigue in both legs and minds following a demanding stretch that featured four victories in six days during a Basketball Champions League qualification tournament. Compounding their exhaustion, Vechta played without three injured point guards: Tommy Kuhse, D’Mitrik Trice, and Kihei Clark.
The visiting Bamberg side seized upon that backcourt depletion from the opening tip. Head coach Jesus Ramirez deployed a relentless, full-court defense that stifled Vechta’s playmaking for nearly 40 minutes, forcing 30 turnovers. The nine-time German champions bounced back decisively from a 108-72 loss in Munich the previous Sunday, setting the tone with a 12-0 run that pushed their advantage to 34-15 by the 12th minute.
“For Bamberg it went very well from the beginning,” Held said after the match. “They showed the expected reaction to their game in Munich. And then, of course, due to our depletion and the strain of the last week, something like this can happen. But definitely congratulations to Bamberg! They did an outstanding job today.”
Despite securing 17 offensive rebounds and fighting through a 36-total rebound effort, Vechta hit just 35 percent of their field goals overall (23 of 65) and 25 percent from beyond the arc (9 of 36). Bamberg countered with blistering shooting efficiency, converting 57 percent from the field (45 of 79), including 62 percent on two-pointers and 43 percent from long range, while racking up 66 points in the paint.
Ramirez acknowledged the fatigue factor affecting his opponents while praising his team’s physical response. “We have to put this game in relation to our game on Sunday in Munich,” Ramirez said. “Today we showed a reaction—it was positive. At the same time, you have to say that Vechta was really tired because of the last week. I would like to congratulate RASTA on the BCL qualification at this point! They deserve all respect for that. Four games in six days including injury problems, that has its price.”
Tibor Pleiß opened the scoring for Vechta with a dunk in the first minute to make it 2-2, and the hosts traded early blows before Bamberg asserted control. Trevon Scott hit the game’s first three-pointer, and Richard Balint followed with a long two-pointer to stretch the lead to 15-11 in the sixth minute, prompting an early timeout from Held. Bamberg’s defense closed the opening period with four blocks and four steals, building a 25-15 lead by the end of the quarter.
Hason Ward notched his fourth block of the evening by the 13th minute, and Jordan Wright pushed the margin to 39-16 from the free-throw line as Bamberg methodically extended their cushion toward a maximum lead of 41 points.
Vechta has little time to dwell on the setback. The team travels immediately for their next league fixture on Saturday against the SKYLINERS in Frankfurt, tipping off at 6:30 p.m. local time (live on Dyn).
“It is not the time to look for excuses, but now to work through things and appear differently in Frankfurt on Saturday,” Held said. “We are looking at everything closely, can change certain things—others we cannot because they are current as they are. It is not an easy situation right now. Nevertheless, we will find solutions for that and then present ourselves differently in Frankfurt.”
