From Virginia Commonwealth and Texas Tech to the NFL Gridiron
Before establishing himself as a reliable force in European basketball, Santos Silva split his athletic loyalties during his collegiate career. While playing for Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and later Texas Tech, he harbored a deep passion for American football. Despite not being chosen in the NFL Draft, he earned an opportunity on May 2, 2022, when the Cleveland Browns signed him as an undrafted free agent to play wide receiver.
That transition tested his physical limits over nearly four months in Cleveland. The demands of lining up to catch passes from quarterbacks while absorbing heavy hits ultimately steered him back to his primary sport. “The other players were too big and the hits we took were tremendous, especially for the knees,” Santos Silva reflected on his time in the NFL, noting that the experience clarified how much he missed basketball.
A European Journey Through France, Israel, and the Czech Republic
Re-centering his focus entirely on the hardwood, Santos Silva embarked on an international club career that tested his adaptability across multiple leagues. During the 2023–24 season, he competed in the second French league with Lille, averaging 11.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest. That production earned him a promotion to the next category with Saint Quentin under coach Julien Mahé.
Following 15 games in France, his path shifted to Israel with Hapoel Be’er Sheva before signing with Nymburk in the summer of 2025. In the Czech Republic, he secured both the national league title and the league cup. Those championship performances included Champions League matchups against Trieste, where then-assistant coach Francesco Nanni took notice of the center’s screen-setting, passing vision, and rebounding dominance.
Landing in Forlì and Embracing Leadership
When Nanni took over as head coach at Forlì, he remembered the physical presence that disrupted his defensive schemes in European competition. That connection led to Santos Silva signing with Unieuro Forlì. Representing Cape Verde internationally—honoring family roots that stretched from the islands to the Boston area around Taunton in the mid-1990s—the center has quickly integrated into the Italian locker room.
Teammates and coaches have praised his willingness to mentor younger players directly, even delivering blunt, constructive criticism when needed. Away from the arena, the quiet forward keeps a low profile in Forlì, spending his downtime refining his culinary skills at home while preparing for the next stretch of the season.
