Lionel Messi announced his retirement from international football with Argentina on Monday, closing a career spanning 207 appearances and 125 goals. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner exits the Albiceleste following a 1–0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The Final Decision and Farewell to the Albiceleste
“Time has passed since the final, and after thinking about it a lot, I want to announce to everyone that I am retiring from the national team,” Messi wrote in a statement published on his Instagram account. “It is a decision (…) that still hurts deep inside, but I understand that it is the time.”
The 39-year-old, who plays club football in the United States for Inter Miami, acknowledged that his body and the natural cycle of the sport dictated his departure. “I don’t have much time left, the stages succeed one another and this one hurts me particularly. I love, have loved and will always love the selection. I leave with the serenity and pride of having offered you, with my teammates, dream moments,” Messi stated.
Reflecting on an International Journey
Messi’s international career with Argentina was characterized by profound struggles before ultimate triumph. He previously retired from international duty in 2016 before returning to lead his country through subsequent tournaments. His major tournament heartbreak included a 1–0 extra-time defeat to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final.
The trajectory shifted decisively in the latter half of his career. Messi captured the Copa América title in 2021, followed by the 2022 FIFA World Cup victory in Qatar. He added another Copa América crown in 2024, cementing his legacy alongside Diego Maradona. His palmarès with the national team also includes an Olympic gold medal from 2008, a Finalissima victory in 2022, and an Under-20 World Cup title won in 2005.
The 2026 World Cup Campaign and Final Appearance
During the 2026 tournament, Messi scored eight goals across the competition, including a hat-trick that carried the team to the title match. However, the Albiceleste fell short in the July 19 showcase against Spain, where they lost 1-0 after extra time at MetLife Stadium.
The defeat coincided with a difficult period in Messi’s personal life. The player was deeply affected by the recent death of his father, Jorge Messi, at age 68, noting in mid-August that he could no longer envision playing “encore longtemps”.
Passing the Torch to a New Generation
“I gave it everything, I have nothing left to give, there are very good youngsters coming up behind who deserve their place,” Messi explained regarding his timing.
While international competition has ended, Messi remains under contract with Inter Miami through the conclusion of the 2028 season.
