Jorthy Mokio delivered a first-half performance against PSV that prompted ESPN analyst Kenneth Perez to suggest the eighteen-year-old Ajax midfielder possesses the quality to play for European giants Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich.
Perez Points to PSG and Bayern Potential
Speaking on the Monday evening broadcast of Voetbalpraat, Perez praised the Belgian teenager’s technical ability and composure during the opening period before pointing out critical physical limitations that surfaced after the break.
Cramps Expose Elite Stamina Deficit
Ajax hosted PSV in a high-tempo Eredivisie fixture that exposed ongoing concerns regarding the fitness levels within the Amsterdam squad. While Mokio started the match and anchored the midfield for 73 minutes, his evening ended prematurely due to severe cramps.
According to Perez, that physical collapse highlighted the stark gap between the midfielder’s current stamina and the demands of elite international football.
“If Mokio had stopped after one half, you would have said: that guy needs to play for Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich,” Perez stated on ESPN. “After the break, however, he was the first player with cramps, the first player whose tank was empty. And that is simply not enough to keep up in Champions League matches played at the absolute highest tempo.”
Bridging the Gap to Top-Tier Requirements
Perez added that a player lacking optimal conditioning would be overwhelmed within ten minutes at Europe’s highest level. The analyst noted that despite Mokio’s undeniable talent and skill on the ball, the physical drop-off remains a significant hurdle in his development.
Journalist Willem Vissers, also speaking on the program, emphasized that Mokio’s youth leaves him ample time to address those physical shortcomings. Vissers noted that the eighteen-year-old still faces the fundamental question of whether he can successfully bridge the gap to top-tier requirements.
Amrabat Arrival Complicates Playing Time
Beyond physical endurance, Perez raised concerns about Mokio’s immediate path to regular playing time following the arrival of experienced midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

Perez pointed out that development stalls when a young player sits on the bench, noting the structural challenge within Dutch football where players who miss out on the senior starting XI rarely secure adequate minutes in reserve or youth squads.
The Road Ahead After the International Break
Vissers observed that Ajax had spent seasons searching for a reliable defensive midfielder, leading the club to secure Amrabat because management felt Mokio, while promising, had not yet reached the required standard for their ambitions.
Perez countered that Mokio could have forced the issue himself by consistently delivering peak performances in every fixture, including away matches against smaller opponents.
