The Daktronics Sponsorship Allegations and the Intuit Dome Connection
According to the podcast report, which cited multiple anonymous sources inside the Clippers organization and the Intuit Dome project, Leonard maintained a partnership with Daktronics that operated outside of his standard player contract. One source described the arrangement to the podcast as a method to funnel money from the franchise through the scoreboard manufacturer back to the player. Daktronics designed the massive Halo video board and other display systems inside the team’s new arena. When the podcast reached out for confirmation, Daktronics referred inquiries to a crisis management spokesperson, who stated, “My understanding is Daktronics doesn’t have a deal with Kawhi right now.” When pressed for further clarification regarding the probe, the spokesperson added, “I don’t know what the company wants to say, or can say, given the Wachtell investigation and all that.” A search of Daktronics’ official website yields no public results or active partnerships listing Leonard’s name.

Investigators from Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz have scrutinized a separate $28 million endorsement deal given to Leonard by Aspiration, a now-bankrupt environmental company and former Clippers jersey patch sponsor. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has maintained that he and the organization were defrauded by Aspiration and its co-founder, Joe Sanberg. Sanberg pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud and was sentenced in June to 14 years in federal prison. Neither the NBA nor the Clippers responded to requests for comment regarding the latest allegations concerning Daktronics.

His seven-year tenure in Los Angeles appeared to conclude when a trade agreement was struck on June 30 to send him back to the Toronto Raptors, the franchise he led to an NBA championship before leaving in free agency in 2019.
