TSG Hoffenheim captain Oliver Baumann has voiced stark frustration over his treatment by the German national football team, drawing a sharp contrast between his recent omission by new manager Jürgen Klopp and his contentious demotion under predecessor Julian Nagelsmann.
Baumann, 36, confirmed that he will not feature in Jürgen Klopp’s first squad selection for Germany’s upcoming fixtures. According to reports from n-tv.de, the veteran goalkeeper admitted the latest decision was difficult to take, though he stated he ultimately respects the coaching staff’s direction.
“I’ve known for a bit longer, I knew before the Stuttgart game,” Baumann told Nitro after Hoffenheim’s 2:0 defeat against OFI Kreta in the opening match of the Europa League. “It doesn’t please me, that’s clear. They’re going a different way, and I have to accept and respect that.”
Klopp’s New Squad Direction
For his initial four-match Nations League block, Klopp bypassed Baumann entirely. Instead, the newly appointed Germany manager named Marc-André ter Stegen of Ajax as his provisional number one choice between the posts. The rest of the goalkeeping pool comprises Alexander Nübel (Besiktas), Finn Dahmen (FC Augsburg), Jonas Urbig (FC Bayern Munich), and Noah Atubolu (Eintracht Frankfurt), according to n-tv.de.
Baumann, who has earned 13 caps for Die Mannschaft, noted that while missing out on Klopp’s initial roster stings, it pales in comparison to the frustration he experienced ahead of the FIFA World Cup hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Nagelsmann’s World Cup Demotion Still Hurts
The Hoffenheim captain did not mince words when reflecting on how Julian Nagelsmann handled the national team’s goalkeeping hierarchy prior to the global tournament. Baumann had established himself as a reliable presence during World Cup qualifying, only to be relegated to the bench as the backup option just weeks before the competition.
“The thing in the summer hurt significantly more,” Baumann said, as reported by n-tv.de. “How that went down was unbelievable, and actually not just from one direction.”
Nagelsmann opted to reinstate Manuel Neuer as his primary starter for the tournament. Following Germany’s exit from the competition after a match against Paraguay, Neuer stepped away from international duty permanently, leaving a void that eventually led to a transitional period under Klopp.
Baumann acknowledged that the managerial shift left him in limbo. Following Nagelsmann’s departure and Klopp’s subsequent arrival, the veteran goalkeeper admitted he “didn’t know where I stood,” adding that he accepts Klopp has chosen to chart a fresh course.
Looking Ahead in Europe and Domestic Play
Despite the disappointment surrounding his international career, Baumann’s immediate focus shifts back to club duties. The 36-year-old captain must rally his Hoffenheim squad following their 2:0 setback in Greece against OFI Kreta.
