Speaking ahead of Germany’s second UEFA Nations League fixture against Greece in Augsburg, Klopp addressed the scrutiny surrounding Wirtz’s early months in England. While acknowledging that the player’s technical abilities remain unquestioned, the former Liverpool manager emphasized that public expectations often ignore the broader human context of a major career move.

“In the world we live in, it is basically the case that things are never fast enough for people,” Klopp told reporters during Saturday’s pre-match press conference.

He added that observers failed to account for the unique circumstances surrounding Wirtz’s arrival at Liverpool. The transfer coincided with the tragic death of Liverpool player Diogo Jota in a traffic accident alongside his brother during the summer pre-season.

“He came into a team at a time when there were an awful lot of players for whom football was not the priority at that moment,” Klopp said. “You arrive as a new player and everyone immediately longs for someone to pull the chestnuts out of the fire. That is impossible. In the year he has gone through, he has certainly learned a great deal.”

Klopp noted that Wirtz is in very good physical condition. However, Liverpool as a club continues to transition following numerous roster changes.

“The team is once again in the process of finding itself after many changes. That takes time,” the manager said.

Tactical Adjustments and Historic Return to Standing Room

The DFB squad prepared in Herzogenaurach before making a scheduled bus journey to Augsburg on Sunday morning rather than the customary day-before arrival. Klopp instituted the travel adjustment to give players maximum recovery time following Friday’s return from Amsterdam, where Germany drew 1:1 with the Netherlands.

Sunday’s encounter in Augsburg is sold out with 29,000 spectators. The match marks the return of standing room at a Germany international fixture for the first time in 25 years, featuring 10,000 spots.

In goal, 29-year-old Alexander Nübel will earn his fourth international cap. Germany faces a Greece side that opened its Nations League campaign with a 2:1 victory in Serbia.
