The executive board of the Judo-Bundesliga handed down a lifetime ban to 24-year-old Akaki Japaridze, barring the Georgian competitor from ever registering or fighting for any club in the top tier of the German Judo Federation (DJB). League officials confirmed the disciplinary action following an emergency review of the incident. Pamela Bickendorf, the league’s league representative, stated that she was satisfied with the outcome of the disciplinary procedure. In addition to the lifetime competition ban, league administrators ruled that a previous bout won by Japaridze against Cavelius will be overturned and scored as a loss, leaving the final team match result between JC Leipzig and TSV Abensberg at a 7–7 draw with 62–57 points.
The Incident During the Bundesliga Match
The altercation occurred during a Bundesliga team fixture where Japaridze competed as a guest fighter for JC Leipzig against Timo Cavelius, a 29-year-old athlete representing TSV Abensberg and a 2024 Olympic participant for Germany. According to match accounts, Japaridze lost the bout in overtime. Following the conclusion of the match, Cavelius clenched his fist in celebration, prompting Japaridze to launch a sudden physical assault consisting of three punches. The strikes fractured Cavelius’s jaw, requiring immediate hospitalization and ruling the German fighter out of the upcoming World Judo Championships in Baku.

Four days after the attack, Japaridze released a statement via Instagram accepting responsibility for the physical altercation but attempting to justify his reaction by claiming he was provoked by verbal and gestural insults from his opponent that violated sports ethics. Cavelius firmly rejected those allegations, clarifying that his celebration was directed exclusively toward his own team and training partners to express joy over a hard-fought victory, with no intention to mock or demean his opponent’s nationality or identity.
