Granit Xhaka Reveals Why He Snubbed Chelsea Transfer to Stay at Sunderland

During a summer transfer window that saw Chelsea actively target veteran leadership to balance a youthful squad, Xhaka emerged as a priority for the Blues’ hierarchy. According to reporting from German outlet Sky Sport via various sources, Chelsea initially held exploratory talks, with manager Xabi Alonso reportedly keen to reunite with the player he won a Bundesliga title and domestic cup with at Bayer Leverkusen during the 2023–24 campaign. The pursuit eventually materialized into a formal £8m bid from Chelsea, an offer that the Sunderland board swiftly rejected.

Unfinished Business on Wearside

Over 34 Premier League appearances, the Swiss international became the tactical heartbeat of the team. Reflecting on why he rejected a switch to a traditional “Big Six” rival, Xhaka emphasized that his initial move was built on a multi-year blueprint rather than a short-term stopover.

“When I signed the contract here, there was a plan behind the scenes, and the plan was to stick to this project, to believe in this project, and to work for this project,” Xhaka explained on the Sports Agents Podcast. He added that a direct conversation with Sunderland’s ownership cemented his resolve: “When I spoke with the owner of Sunderland, I told him from the beginning, I don’t have the feeling that this project is done yet, and this is my motivation.”

Looking Ahead to European Nights

With a contract running until 2028, Xhaka remains focused on leading Sunderland through their upcoming continental schedule. The club is preparing for a historic Europa League campaign featuring a league phase schedule against sides like AZ Alkmaar, Lech Poznan, Dinamo Zagreb, and Anderlecht. “I want to enjoy the European football with this football club with the fans, and hopefully we can get more after this season,” Xhaka said.
