Launched to place the Gipuzkoa territory firmly on the national basketball map with backing from public institutions, the organization has navigated various divisions, sponsorships, and structural shifts over the past twenty-five years.
From Segunda LEB Beginnings to ACB Heights
The journey of Gipuzkoa Basket began in the Segunda División LEB before a series of early reboots and reorganization phases eventually brought the club back to the same tier for the 2004–2005 season. Momentum accelerated immediately afterward. In the 2005–2006 campaign, the squad captured the Primera LEB championship crown and earned promotion to the Liga ACB, Spain’s premier professional basketball division, for the first time in club history.
Though that inaugural top-tier stay proved short-lived with an immediate relegation back down, the club bounced back during the 2007–2008 season to secure another promotion to the ACB. This second wave established a more durable foothold in the top division, weathered by occasional promotions and relegations over subsequent cycles. The team’s peak achievement in Spain’s top flight arrived during the 2011–2012 regular season when they finished in an impressive fifth place in the standings.
Recent Years and the Transition to Askatuak Gipuzkoa
Following seasons of competing among Spain’s elite clubs, Gipuzkoa Basket experienced a relegation to LEB Oro—the country’s second-tier competition—at the conclusion of the 2020–2021 campaign. The squad has spent the last five seasons battling within that competitive second division.
