The German Judo Federation (Deutscher Judo-Bund) has strongly condemned a violent altercation in the Bundesliga, reacting sharply to public justifications offered by the athlete involved. According to reports from national sports coverage, 24-year-old Akaki Japaridze struck opposing judoka Timo Cavelius following a match, resulting in severe facial injuries that required immediate hospitalization and surgery.
The Incident and Immediate Medical Aftermath
The confrontation took place last Saturday after a league match between competitors representing different clubs. Cavelius, an Olympic starter fighting for TSV Abensberg, secured a victory over Japaridze, who competed for JC Leipzig. Following the conclusion of the bout, Cavelius showed a clenched fist toward his team and also toward Japaridze.
Japaridze suddenly attacked his opponent and injured him severely in the face. The assault left Cavelius with a broken jaw. He was transported to the Leipzig University Hospital, where surgeons performed an immediate operation to stabilize the fracture using three plates. Medical staff estimate that Cavelius faces a recovery window of ten to twelve weeks before he can fight again.
“I am on the way to recovery,” Cavelius stated in remarks reported by dpa. Regarding the build-up to the attack, the German judoka added, “Even if my celebration caused negative emotions in Akaki Japaridze, this cannot explain or justify such an excess of violence. I neither verbally insulted him nor physically attacked him.”
The Athlete’s Statement and International Reaction
Following the event, Japaridze traveled back to Georgia and issued a public statement via Instagram to explain his actions. The competitor asserted that the incident “was not the result of emotions” triggered merely by losing a sporting contest.
Instead, Japaridze claimed the altercation stemmed from “insulting behavior by the opponent towards me, both verbally and through gestures.” He added that such conduct violated sporting ethics and was unacceptable to him “as a Georgian and as a man.”
The post drew attention, including expressions of support and endorsement from several international judo stars.
Federation Condemnation and Disciplinary Stance
The German Judo Federation responded with an uncompromising statement rejecting the justification offered by the fighter and expressing dismay over the online support he received. The federation stated they were “stunned by the statement” and equally troubled by “the support and endorsements that this post received, partly from respected international judo stars.”
The national governing body emphasized that any attempt to reframe the assault as an understandable response to provocation crossed a clear ethical line. “A relativization or even defense of this serious bodily harm is intolerable for us and incompatible with the basic principles of our sport,” the federation declared.
The federation clarified that the violence had nothing to do with the relationship between the clubs or the relationship between the two nations. “We are not talking about an emotional scuffle or an understandable escalation level after a supposed provocation,” the governing body noted. “This was a massive assault that carried the risk of severe physical injury.”
