The announcement came via a video published on Instagram, filmed in part alongside his son in his hometown of Pont-l’Evêque in the Calvados department of Normandy.
A Personal Farewell in Normandy
“Papa has finished playing basketball,” Batum stated in the video, reflecting on his professional tenure that spanned nearly two decades in North America and a decade and a half with Les Bleus.
“I decided to stop playing basketball because I want to go home, to leave my place for others because I’ve done my time,” Batum explained in his announcement. “When you’ve done as much basketball as me, you have to know when to stop at some point.”
From Le Mans to North America
Formed at Pont-l’Evêque, Batum first emerged on the professional scene with Le Mans Sarthe Basket in France’s Pro A league before launching his North American career. He spent over 1,200 regular-season matches playing for the Portland Trail Blazers, Charlotte Hornets, Philadelphia 76ers, and Los Angeles Clippers.
Securing Glory with Les Bleus
Across his illustrious international career, Batum earned 177 caps for the French national team. He captured silver medals at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 and the Paris Olympic Games in 2024, adding to a resume that includes a FIBA EuroBasket title in 2013 and consecutive bronze medals at the FIBA Basketball World Cups in 2014 and 2019.
The Defining Play in Tokyo
His tenure with the French squad is immortalized by a defining defensive play during the Tokyo Olympic semifinals against Slovenia on Aug. 5, 2021. With France leading 90-89 in the waning seconds, Batum delivered a chase-down block on a layup attempt to secure his team’s berth in the gold-medal game.
Standing 2.02 meters (6-foot-7), Batum established himself as one of Europe’s two-way wings, valued for his perimeter defense, playmaking versatility, and veteran leadership in both the NBA locker room and international competition.
