Following a nearly three-year suspension driven by the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Palestinian football is officially preparing to resume nationwide competitions on September 4, according to the Palestinian Football Association (PFA). PFA President Jibril Rajoub announced the restart during a press conference in Ramallah, marking a significant milestone for athletic communities across the region.
The upcoming restart encompasses 226 clubs playing across three distinct regions. The federation confirmed that 146 clubs will participate from the occupied West Bank, 44 from the Gaza Strip, and 36 from Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. Matches are scheduled to begin simultaneously across all three territories.
The “Cup of a Thousand Martyrs” Tournament
The inaugural tournament back will be designated as the “Cup of a Thousand Martyrs,” according to the PFA. The governing body stated that the naming convention serves as a tribute to 1,014 Palestinian athletes who have died during the war that began on October 7, 2023.
“We are announcing the resumption of sports activities and the football federation championship starting from September 4,” Rajoub said in Ramallah. He noted that the war created exceptionally difficult conditions that forced the complete suspension of domestic matches and training, but emphasized that the athletic community maintained its resolve.
“We have not lost our national will, nor the conviction that sport remains a symbol of hope and life,” Rajoub stated.
Financial strain remains a pressing hurdle for the organization. During his remarks, the PFA president called on the international football community and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to step up with financial assistance. He urged global governing bodies to help protect the rights of children, players, and clubs to practice their sports freely and with dignity.
