The Federación de Básquetbol de Chile and the Confederación Argentina de Básquetbol signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Puerto Aysén, Chile, establishing a formal framework to coordinate cross-border regional competitions, youth talent development programs, and technical clinics for coaches and players across both nations.
The institutional agreement was finalized during an official ceremony attended by municipal and basketball federation leaders, including Aysén Mayor Luis Martínez Gallardo, FebaChile President Karin Heerwagen, CAB President Sergio Gatti, and Walter Torres, president of the Chubut Basketball Federation.
Establishing Cross-Border Competition and FIBA Integration
A cornerstone of the newly signed accord involves the organization of regional, national, and international tournaments that incorporate clubs and representative teams from Chile and Argentina. Under the terms of the cooperative framework, both national governing bodies will facilitate the reciprocal entry of domestic squads into external competitions, including tournaments operating under the umbrella of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
FebaChile leadership emphasized that the alliance uses the natural geographic proximity and institutional relationships shared between Chile's Aysén Region and Argentina's neighboring Chubut Province.
“This agreement represents an opportunity to deepen the ties between Argentine and Chilean basketball and, especially, to generate new development possibilities on both sides of the cordillera,” CAB President Sergio Gatti said.
Youth Talent Programs and Technical Education
Beyond senior club competition, the pact mandates a specific operational chapter dedicated to youth development and prospect identification. The initiative outlines joint youth tournaments, specialized training clinics, and resource-sharing programs aimed at standardizing organizational practices and administrative training.
The agreement also establishes joint seminars and certification courses tailored for coaches, referees, and support personnel. Officials from both federations noted that sharing technical infrastructure and educational curricula will help accelerate the professionalization of basketball operations in regional markets outside the major capital cities.
“For the Federación de Básquetbol de Chile, this step reaffirms the commitment to generate more competitions, training, development, and opportunities for Chilean basketball, strengthening ties with regional sports institutions,” FebaChile President Karin Heerwagen stated.
