Axel Merckx has clarified his presence at the UCI Road World Championships in Canada alongside his wife, elite cyclist Lotte Kopecky, emphasizing that his role as a spectator and husband remains strictly separate from her professional athletic career. According to coverage in Het Nieuwsblad, Merckx maintains that his trip to the global championships follows a long-standing personal tradition rather than any coaching or support obligation.
The couple married earlier this year following a relationship that began late last year, with Merckx now residing in Bruges. Despite sharing hotel accommodations during the Canadian championships, Merckx stated that professional boundaries remain firmly in place. “We stay in the hotel, but she does everything with the national team and I keep my distance,” Merckx said, as reported by Het Nieuwsblad. “It’s not like we eat together or go cycling together. I didn’t even bring my bike.”
Tradition and Team Commitments at the World Championships
Merckx’s journey to the international showcase serves multiple personal and professional interests outside of his marriage. As a directeur sportif who oversees developmental cycling talent, his attendance allows him to monitor riders from his own under-23 squad competing for their respective national programs. “I go to the World Championships every year, even in the past,” Merckx explained to Het Nieuwsblad. “I like it, a race with national teams. Also because there are always a few riders from my own team riding with the under-23s. Not that those guys can’t do without me, but it’s a bonus.”
Aside from occasional afternoon coffee breaks when scheduling permits, the couple operate on separate schedules throughout the competition window. Merckx noted that Kopecky focuses entirely on her commitments with the Belgian national team setup while he observes the racing from the sidelines.
Life Changes Away from the Cycling Paddock
The marriage has brought significant lifestyle adjustments for Merckx, who relocated to Bruges and finds himself attending women’s races with far greater frequency than before. “Naturally, if you are in a relationship, your life changes anyway,” Merckx said. “I live in Bruges now, for starters. I am also much more at the women’s races. I won’t say I’m always there, that’s not necessary. But when Lotte rides, I try to drop by.”
Domestic life has likewise expanded with the addition of several pets at home, including two cats and a dog named Ollie, whom Merckx identified as a primary companion in interviews. While domestic happiness is high, Merckx drew a hard line regarding Kopecky’s professional trajectory. “No, seriously: we are super happy,” Merckx stated. “I think everyone can see that in both of us. But when it comes to her career, I stay on my side.”
