Former New England Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri set a high-altitude record by converting a field goal at 3,454 meters above sea level in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland. The historic kick took place on the snow-covered Jungfraujoch pass, bridging the cantons of Bern and Valais, and was officially registered by the Guinness Book of Records.
Conquering the Bernese Alps at 3,454 Meters
The 53-year-old former NFL star traveled to the Swiss mountain pass to execute the record-breaking field goal, braving freezing conditions and high-altitude elements. Operating in the snow at the Jungfraujoch required an immediate physical adjustment, as thin air drastically altered breathing patterns and heart rates. Speaking just before his historic attempt, Adam Vinatieri noted the unpredictable physical strain of the environment. “On ressent l’altitude à chaque respiration, le rythme cardiaque change, le tempo est différent, et personne ne peut vraiment prédire à l’avance l’impact sur le coup de pied, car personne ne l’a jamais fait auparavant,” he stated regarding the unprecedented nature of kicking at such an elevation.
Promoting the NFL in Europe and Munich
Beyond the entry into the Guinness Book of Records, the high-altitude stunt served as a major promotional launchpad for the upcoming international NFL fixture in Germany. The New England Patriots are scheduled to face the Detroit Lions at the Allianz Arena in Munich in mid-November. To help inaugurate the upcoming matchup, Vinatieri was joined in Switzerland by former Bayern Munich striker Giovane Elber. Elber assisted the four-time Super Bowl champion by holding the ball during the record-setting field goal attempt. The pair also engaged in lighthearted ball-jongling exchanges using both traditional soccer balls and American footballs to celebrate the ongoing partnership between American football franchises and European soccer clubs.

The trip to the Swiss Alps and the upcoming contest in Munich mark the latest chapter in the NFL’s ongoing global expansion efforts. For the New England Patriots, the trip to Allianz Arena represents their return to European soil following their previous international appearance in 2024. During that prior overseas outing, the franchise traveled to London, where they squared off against the Jacksonville Jaguars inside Wembley Stadium.
