Millions of people across Germany turned their eyes to the sky to observe a striking partial solar eclipse. Perfect weather conditions allowed for clear viewing across northern regions, according to regional reports.
The celestial event featured the Moon passing between the Earth and the Sun, blocking a significant portion of solar light and turning the sun into a slim crescent in the late evening sky.
Timetable and Trajectory Across the Regions
According to reports from NDR, the partial solar eclipse began in Kiel at approximately 19:12 local time (UTC+2), with southern locations seeing the start moments later, such as Göttingen at 19:17.
Depending on the exact geographical position across northern Germany, the peak of the darkness occurred between 20:06 and 20:11.
The visibility of the eclipse’s conclusion varied by region. Some areas experienced the end of the alignment as the Sun dipped below the horizon, while others watched the Sun set while the Moon was still passing across it.
Coverage Varies from Germany to Spain
While northern Germany experienced roughly 85 percent coverage of the Sun, parts of southern Germany saw up to 90 percent coverage, as detailed by regional meteorological accounts.
Observers looking further south toward Spain witnessed a total solar eclipse where the Sun was completely covered. A total eclipse was also visible over parts of Iceland, Greenland, and northern Spain.
Astronomers noted that the alignment occurred exclusively during a new moon phase when the Sun, Moon, and Earth lined up precisely.
A Rush for Certified Eye Protection
Opticians and safety officials repeatedly emphasized that watching the event required certified eye protection. Staring at the Sun with the naked eye carries severe risks of permanent optical damage.
Specialized solar viewing glasses—constructed with cardboard frames and extremely dark polymer filters—were reported sold out in numerous locations as demand surged. Standard sunglasses failed to provide adequate defense against the intense solar radiation.
Safeguarding Sensitive Camera Sensors
Special precautions were also necessary for electronic equipment. Direct exposure to intense sunlight can ruin the sensitive digital sensors inside cameras and smartphones in the same way unprotected human eyes suffer damage.

Experts suggested placing a certified solar filter or a piece of designated solar filter film over camera lenses and securing it with transparent tape to safely capture the phenomenon.
Perseid Meteor Shower Follows Twilight
Following the conclusion of the eclipse, skywatchers were treated to a secondary astronomical occurrence.
The peak of the Perseid meteor shower coincided with the new moon night, offering clear-sky observers an opportunity to spot shooting stars late into the evening without the need for special safety filters.
