Isabel Gose Extends Medal Run in Paris Pool
Isabel Gose continued her strong form at the European Championships by capturing her third medal of the meet in the pool, as reported by ZDF and swim.de. The Magdeburg distance specialist clocked 8:18,44 minutes over the 800-meter distance, managing to challenge the eventual winner for the majority of the race.
Italy’s Simona Quadarella captured the European title with a winning time of 8:15,55 minutes. According to coverage from swim.de, Gose was able to stay within striking distance of Quadarella for approximately the first 600 meters before the Italian pulled away.
“I’m super happy about my third medal at the European Championships and the season-best time,” Gose said in remarks reported by swim.de. “Up front it felt really good, at the back end I lacked a bit of energy. That shouldn’t be an excuse, because that is exactly what we train for.”
Gose added that her transition from open water events—where she previously captured gold in the knockout sprint and the team relay in Paris—to the pool “went better than expected,” according to ZDF.
Maya Werner Smashes Personal Best for Bronze
Swimming in the same final, Gose’s training partner and club colleague Maya Werner delivered a major breakthrough by shattering her previous personal best. Werner touched the wall in 8:22,55 minutes to secure the bronze medal.
According to ZDF’s reporting, Werner’s previous career-best mark stood at 8:29,53 minutes, meaning she slashed nearly seven seconds off her personal record.
“I noticed today that the glide is there. It’s simply great,” Werner said, as quoted by ZDF. After the race, she added that the strong performance left her feeling ready for the remainder of the competition week.
German Results Across the Paris Pool and Schedule
The strong distance showing by Gose and Werner highlighted a busy day for the German swimming delegation in Paris. Other finals saw mixed results for defending champions and record holders.
In the men’s 100-meter breaststroke, Potsdam’s Melvin Imoudu missed out on a successful title defense. The 27-year-old, who won gold in the event two years prior, finished fourth in 59,05 seconds. Olympic champion Nicolò Martinenghi of Italy claimed the gold in 58,58 seconds, ahead of Russia’s Ivan Koschakin (58,68 seconds) and Italy’s Simone Cerasuolo (58,90 seconds), according to ZDF.
Backstroke specialist Lise Seidel also placed fourth in the 200-meter final, clocking 2:08,86 minutes. Britain’s Katie Shanahan won the event in 2:06,13 minutes. In the men’s 50-meter butterfly, German record holder Luca Armbruster finished sixth in 22,84 seconds, while Egor Kornev took the gold.
Looking ahead to the upcoming sessions, 19-year-old Johannes Liebmann enters the 800-meter freestyle final as a gold favorite after setting the fastest time in the preliminary heats, with the race scheduled for Wednesday evening. World champion Anna Elendt also advanced to the 100-meter breaststroke final with the fifth-fastest time of 1:05,92 minutes.
