Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy returned to the team’s training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, on Monday following a two-week absence after his wife was shot in their Virginia home, according to reports from The Athletic.
The Return to Practice in St. Joseph
Bieniemy stepped back onto the practice field on Monday, August 10, 2026, greeted by players and coaching staff after stepping away from the team on July 27, 2026. According to The Athletic, his wife, Mia Bieniemy, sustained multiple gunshot wounds during an incident at the couple’s residence in Ashburn, Virginia, on July 26. As Bieniemy walked toward the field to resume his duties, he told fans and well-wishers, “It’s great to be back.”
Chiefs coach Andy Reid expressed relief regarding his coordinator’s return. “Good to have E.B. back — back in the fold,” Reid said after practice, as reported by The Athletic. “I don’t think he missed a step. Man, he was out there getting after it. So that’s a positive for the offensive side.”
Staying Connected During the Absence
During his two-week hiatus from the facility, Bieniemy maintained communication with the coaching staff and front office. According to team accounts published by The Athletic, he monitored livestreams of Chiefs training camp sessions and even phoned general manager Brett Veach during drills. Bieniemy instructed Veach to hand the phone to Reid to relay tactical directions regarding rookie running back Emmett Johnson.
“I was talking to him several times a day, so I knew he was coming back (soon) if everything worked out the way it had been,” Reid said, noting that Mia Bieniemy is stable and improving daily.

Players on the offensive roster acknowledged an immediate lift upon Bieniemy’s return to the sideline. “Just being able to have his voice and his coaching points and his energy, it’s infectious,” Chiefs tight end Jake Briningstool told The Athletic. “It’s great to have him back out here.”
Bieniemy rejoined the Chiefs coaching staff as offensive coordinator for the 2026 season, returning to the franchise where he previously coordinated the offense from 2018 through 2022. He spent the 2023 season as the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders, whose practice facility is located roughly three miles from the Bieniemy home in Virginia.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings in Virginia
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office stated that Elijah Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of Eric and Mia Bieniemy, was arrested and charged in connection with the shooting, which left an adult female with multiple gunshot wounds. According to law enforcement releases cited by The Athletic, Elijah Bieniemy faces charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside of a dwelling.
