Speaking to reporters in New York at the annual CBS NFL season preview event, CBS Sports CEO David Berson addressed the status of the network’s top broadcaster for the first time since the OWI charge sidelined him ahead of the upcoming campaign.

According to Deadline, Berson described the situation as both a personnel matter and a legal issue for the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback. When pressed by media members on Tuesday, the network executive noted that the organization is actively investigating the incident.
“It’s an evolving situation, and therefore we’re still investigating,” Berson said at the New York preview event. “There is no timetable or final decision at this time.”
Romo was pulled over on an interstate highway in his home state of Wisconsin last month. CBS Sports responded swiftly by suspending the broadcaster until further notice via a brief statement, subsequently elevating J.J. Watt—previously the network’s No. 2 analyst—into Romo’s primary analyst slot alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson for the start of the season.
Legal Timeline and Contractual Implications
The legal proceedings surrounding the arrest are scheduled to move forward on September 21, eight days after the network broadcasts its first NFL regular-season game of the year. “We have to consider the impact on our image and our brand,” Berson said. “That’s very important to us. Whether the games, marketing, PR, social, the focus should be, and needs to be, on our presentation and this great product, and not on any other factors.”

With the regular season rapidly approaching, Berson noted that management needed to establish certainty for the hundreds of production, marketing, and operational staff members working on the NFL slate. Rather than leaving the booth’s configuration uncertain on the eve of kickoff, leadership locked in the broadcast team to allow preparations to proceed smoothly.
“Fortunately, we have a very deep bench, and I’m really proud of the way everyone’s stepping up and responding,” Berson said, adding that Nantz, Watt, and Wolfson are already deep into planning.
