Oval Office Remarks Follow Free Agency Decision

The remarks came on the same day James announced plans to bypass retirement and return for a 24th season in the National Basketball Association. Rather than returning to the Los Angeles Lakers or exploring reunions with the Cleveland Cavaliers or Miami Heat, the 41-year-old forward opted to join a Philadelphia squad featuring Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, and Tyrese Maxey according to NewsNation. Trump plays golf with Jordan and calls him a friend.

“Well, Michael Jordan’s a guy that’s a friend of mine. I golf with him. He’s a really good guy. I think LeBron is maybe he’s a racist, but maybe he doesn’t like Trump. I don’t know. But I only like people that like me, so I would say Michael Jordan all the way,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

The statement adds a fresh chapter to a public rivalry spanning nearly a decade. The two figures have traded sharp critiques since James campaigned for Hillary Clinton in her 2016 run against Trump, writing at the time that we need a president who brings us together and keeps us unified.

Years of Public Clashes Over Politics and Race

Tensions escalated significantly in September 2017 when James criticized Trump’s decision to rescind a White House invitation to the Golden State Warriors following their championship win. Posting on social media at the time, James wrote, “U bum,” adding that Going to the White House was a great honor until you showed up!

Trump lashed out at James the next year, writing that an interview the NBA all-star had done with then-CNN correspondent Don Lemon had made Lebron look smart, which isn’t easy to do. Around that same period, James asserted in a CNN interview that the man in control has given people and racism, and negative racism, an opportunity to be out.

James had previously criticized Trump for his attacks on Black athletes who were choosing to kneel in protest against racial injustice during the national anthem. During Trump’s first term, after Trump called James a “bum” after James defended fellow NBA superstar Stephen Curry for not going to the White House, James remarked on the situation by stating, It’s not even a surprise when he says something, James said. It’s, like, laughable; it’s laughable, and it’s scary. James also stated at the time, While we cannot change what comes out of that man’s mouth, we can continue to alert the people that watch us, that listen to us that this is not the way.

Philadelphia 76ers Championship Expectations

Amid the political discourse, basketball analysts and former players have focused on what the two-year, $8 million agreement means for the Eastern Conference. Pro basketball Hall of Famer Dwight Howard, a former Lakers teammate of James, believes LeBron James’ addition to the Philadelphia 76ers makes them the frontrunners for next season’s NBA championship.

I think he’s going to flourish with this team. He’s going to extend Joel’s career. I think just with his smarts alone, he’s going to make this team; they’re the favorites for me. I don’t see nobody beating them like that, Howard told NewsNation. Howard added, “When I first heard about it, I said, ‘Man, LeBron is one of the greatest chess players there.’ I think this was the best move he could have made going to Philadelphia. Amazing city, amazing fan base, have one of the best fan bases in basketball. They have a great team already and he was the missing piece.”
