Judo Development in Tierra del Fuego: A Look at the Malvinas Argentinas Tournament
The Malvinas Argentinas Judo Tournament, the premier annual event organized by the Judo and Personal Defense Federation of Tierra del Fuego, recently brought together between 80 and 90 athletes at the Alejandro “Guata” Navarro Municipal Sports Center in Río Grande. The competition, which took place this past Saturday, serves as a significant provincial fixture for judokas across the region, highlighting the sport’s ongoing development in the southernmost province of Argentina.
Event Format and Competition Details
This year’s edition of the tournament maintained its provincial designation, building on the structure established in 2025. The schedule was designed to accommodate a wide range of age groups, with younger categories competing during the midday hours, followed by an official inauguration ceremony. The event concluded in the late afternoon, between 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. local time.

While the event drew participants from Ushuaia, organizers noted that the delegation from Santa Cruz was unable to attend due to unforeseen transportation challenges. The tournament continues to be a key venue for local talent, following a 2025 edition where Río Grande finished at the top of the standings, followed by Ushuaia in second place and Tolhuin in third.
Building Momentum for Regional and National Success
The athletes competing in Río Grande arrived with significant recent experience. Only weeks prior, the Tierra del Fuego women’s team secured a gold medal at the 19th Patagonian Games (EPaDe) in Santa Rosa, La Pampa, while the men’s squad earned a third-place finish. Many of the judokas who represented the province at those games were present to compete in the Malvinas Argentinas tournament, signaling a high level of continuity and preparation within the regional program.
The competitive calendar remains active, with eyes turning toward national and international opportunities. On Thursday, June 18, the CeNARD (National Center for High Performance Sports) in Buenos Aires will host a Junior Pan American Cup. The event has already drawn 90 entries from eight different countries.
The Path to International Ranking
For many local competitors, the focus remains on gaining experience in sanctioned environments. While athletes such as Jeremías Sosa, Alexander Lamas, and Máximo Mena are active in the regional circuit, official records indicate that they do not yet hold points for the International Judo Federation (IJF) ranking. These rankings are the primary pathway for athletes seeking qualification for World Championship events and the Olympic Games.

The Malvinas Argentinas tournament remains a foundational step for these judokas as they look to refine their technique and gain the competitive exposure necessary to eventually challenge for international standing. As the regional federation continues to host these provincial events, the focus remains on fostering the next generation of Argentine judo talent.
