Austrian Tennis Star Sinja Kraus Misses Top 100 Return After Oeiras Final Loss
Austrian tennis player Sinja Kraus saw her bid to return to the WTA Top 100 come up short on Sunday, losing the WTA 125 Challenger final in Oeiras, Portugal, to Poland’s Maja Chwalinska in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
The loss prevented Kraus from capturing what would have been her second WTA 125 title and 15th career tournament victory overall. However, her runner-up finish still earned her a career-high ranking of world No. 104, marking her best position since briefly breaking into the Top 100 earlier in her career.
“She has the class to stay in the Top 100 longer,” remarked an unnamed source quoted in the Kronen Zeitung, capturing the sentiment surrounding Kraus’ recent form and potential.
The 23-year-old Viennese player had reached her second WTA 125 final after defeating Latvia’s Darja Semenistaja in the semifinals, winning 6-3, 6-2. That victory had already secured her a place in the live rankings at No. 110, with tournament victory guaranteeing a return to the Top 100.
Kraus’ journey to the Oeiras final included notable wins over American Whitney Osuigwe (6-3, 6-3, 6-1 in the second round) and Latvian Oksana Selekhmeteva (6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals). Her path to the semifinals began with a victory over Croatian Petra Marcinko in the first round.
The Austrian tennis scene saw mixed results during the same period, with compatriot Julia Grabher falling out of the Top 100 while fellow Austrian Sebastian Ofner successfully qualified for the main draw of the ATP 1000 Madrid Open, benefiting from withdrawals by Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic due to injuries.
Looking at Kraus’ recent career trajectory, she captured her first WTA 125 title in Cali in 2025, adding to four ITF circuit titles that same year. Her 2024 season featured main draw appearances at WTA 250 events in Linz and Cluj-Napoca, along with an ITF title in Seville.
Born on April 29, 2002, Kraus began her professional journey on the ITF circuit in 2018 at age 16, winning her first title in Antalya. She broke into the Top 200 in 2022 after contesting her first Grand Slam qualifying event at the US Open and earning her first WTA Tour main draw victory at the 2021 Linz tournament as a wildcard entrant.
Despite the disappointment in Oeiras, Kraus’ performance represents continued progress for the Austrian tennis star. Her current ranking of No. 104 reflects consistent improvement and positions her well for future attempts to break back into the elite Top 100 tier of women’s tennis.
Kraus’ next scheduled appearance is set for the WTA 1000 Madrid Open, where she is slated to face Russian Anastasia Potapova on Court 7 at 6:30 PM local time. The match represents an immediate opportunity to build on her Oeiras performance against a Top 20 opponent.
