After a turbulent complete to the 2023-24 NBA season marred by injury and inconsistent playing time, Los Angeles Clippers guard Norman Powell said he is keeping all possibilities on the table this summer as he evaluates his future with the franchise.
Powell, who entered the final year of his four-year, $90 million contract extension signed in 2021, appeared in just 52 regular-season games due to a right hip strain that sidelined him for nearly two months. His absence coincided with a critical stretch in which the Clippers fought for playoff positioning in the fiercely competitive Western Conference.
“I’ve been through ups and downs before,” Powell told reporters following the Clippers’ season-ending loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the play-in tournament. “This year was different — not just physically, but mentally. When you’re not out there helping your team win, it weighs on you. But I’m not closing any doors. I want to be in a situation where I can contribute, compete, and feel valued.”
The 30-year-old veteran, known for his elite three-point shooting and relentless defensive effort, averaged 13.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game this season — his lowest scoring output since the 2017-18 campaign with the Toronto Raptors. His 38.1% mark from beyond the arc, while still respectable, marked a decline from his career-high 40.7% in 2022-23.
Despite the statistical dip, Powell remains one of the most reliable perimeter defenders in the league, frequently tasked with guarding opposing teams’ best backcourt players. His ability to switch onto bigger wings and hold his own in isolation situations has made him a staple in Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue’s defensive schemes.
“Norm brings toughness, intelligence, and professionalism every single day,” Lue said in a post-season press conference. “He’s a winner. We’ve seen what he can do when he’s healthy and engaged. Now it’s about getting him back to that place — physically and mentally.”
The Clippers, who finished fifth in the West with a 51-31 record before falling in the play-in game, face significant roster decisions this offseason. With Paul George entering player-option territory and Kawhi Leonard’s long-term availability always a question, Los Angeles may look to retool around its core.
For Powell, the situation presents both uncertainty and opportunity. If the Clippers opt to move in a different direction, he could become a sought-after commodity on the trade market. Teams in need of veteran shooting and defensive versatility — such as the Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, or New York Knicks — have historically shown interest in his skill set.
Alternatively, a contract extension or restructured deal could maintain him in Southern California, where he has developed strong ties to the organization and community. Powell has been active in Los Angeles through his nonprofit work, particularly focused on youth basketball programs in underserved neighborhoods.
“I love this city,” Powell said. “I love the fans, the culture, the way we compete. But at the end of the day, I have to do what’s best for me and my family. That means listening to my body, evaluating my options, and making a decision that lets me play the game I love at a high level.”
NBA free agency opens on June 30, with teams permitted to begin negotiating with players on June 24. Powell will become an unrestricted free agent if he declines his player option for the 2024-25 season, which is worth approximately $23.5 million.
According to Spotrac, the Clippers have roughly $48 million in projected cap space for the upcoming offseason, depending on decisions regarding George, Leonard, and other role players. That flexibility could allow Los Angeles to retain Powell while pursuing additional upgrades.
“I don’t want to rush anything,” Powell added. “I’ll take the time I need to talk with my agents, my family, and the people who’ve been with me through everything. Whatever happens, I want to look back and know I gave it my all.”
As the NBA offseason approaches, all eyes will be on how the Clippers navigate their pivotal summer — and whether Norman Powell remains a part of their plans moving forward.
