Mazara del Vallo: 300 Young Athletes Compete in Provincial Youth Games Track & Field Event

MAZARA DEL VALLO, Italy – A new era of youth athletics dawned in Mazara del Vallo this week as approximately 300 student-athletes from across the province of Trapani competed in the provincial phase of the Nuovi Giochi della Gioventù (New Youth Games) track and field championships. The event, held Tuesday at the newly constructed athletics track within the Cittadella dello Sport in Contrada Affacciata, showcased the talent and dedication of young athletes from secondary schools throughout the region.

The championships featured a full slate of events, including competitions in high jump (men’s and women’s), long jump (men’s and women’s), shot put, vortex (for athletes with special needs), and sprint races spanning 80, 100, and 1000 meters, culminating in exciting relay races. The atmosphere was electric, fueled by a beautiful sunny day and the enthusiasm of the competitors.

A Collaborative Effort for Youth Sport

The success of the event was a testament to the strong collaboration between the Ufficio Scolastico Provinciale (Provincial School Office), the Ufficio Sport of the Comune di Mazara del Vallo (Municipality of Mazara del Vallo), the provincial branch of the Federazione Italiana di Atletica Leggera (FIDAL – Italian Athletics Federation) led by Giuseppe Sammartano, and the Dipartimento di Scienze Motorie (Department of Motor Sciences) of the “Ruggiero D’Altavilla” Institute. This partnership underscored a shared commitment to fostering youth sports and providing opportunities for young athletes to excel.

Representing the municipality, Paola Caltagirone, President of the Commissione consiliare Sport (Council Sports Commission), extended greetings on behalf of Mayor Salvatore Quinci. Caltagirone emphasized the educational value of the event, stating, “The event celebrates not only sport, but also the values of friendship, respect, and solidarity. It is an encouragement to our young people to supply their best, in sport as in life, learning the importance of teamwork.”

Behind the Scenes: The Organizing Committee

The meticulous organization of the championships was spearheaded by a dedicated technical commission from the Ufficio Scolastico Provinciale. Francesco Ciulla served as the coordinator, with Simone Tramuta acting as the zonal representative. Antonino Alagna, Giuseppe Tallarita, Giuseppe Guiana, Irene Restuccia, and Enrico Angelo rounded out the team, ensuring a smooth and well-executed competition.

The new athletics track at the Cittadella dello Sport proved to be an ideal venue, providing athletes with a state-of-the-art facility to showcase their skills. Organizers expressed hope that future editions of the event will be open to the public, further enhancing the visibility and impact of youth athletics in the region. The facility represents a significant investment in the sporting infrastructure of Mazara del Vallo and the surrounding area.

This provincial phase served as a crucial stepping stone for young athletes, offering a platform for competition, personal growth, and the development of a lifelong passion for athletics. The event not only highlighted the athletic prowess of the students but also reinforced the importance of sportsmanship, dedication, and teamwork. It’s a reminder of the power of sport to unite communities and inspire the next generation of athletes.

Looking ahead, the focus now shifts to the next stage of the Nuovi Giochi della Gioventù, with athletes hoping to build on their performances and advance to regional and national competitions. The success of this provincial event bodes well for the future of youth athletics in Mazara del Vallo and the wider Trapani province.
