The Olympic Pathway and Upcoming World Championship

Canada secured its spot at the world championship by reaching last year’s IFAF Americas Continental championship in Panama, where the squad dropped a 12-0 decision to Mexico in a contest halted in the first half by severe weather. That performance followed a historic bronze medal at the 2025 World Games in China, marking Canada’s first-ever international women’s flag football hardware.

At the upcoming IFAF world championship in Germany this August, the stakes are clear. The top two teams will automatically qualify for the Los Angeles Games. However, if the United States reaches the tournament final, the top three squads will advance, given that the Americans already hold an automatic Olympic berth as the host nation.

The national team roster remains fluid ahead of the global showcase. Canada’s final 12-player roster for the world championship will be set later this summer following a series of practices and exhibition games in China against the Chinese squad and Australia.

Quarterback Competition and Recent Field Performance

Parker has handled starting quarterback duties for Canada since 2024. She currently competes for the No. 1 job with Elisabeth Ashkar.

Both signal-callers saw action in Canada’s recent 34-33 victory over the United States. Parker completed 19 of 25 pass attempts for 164 yards and three touchdowns, while Ashkar went 13-of-19 for 109 yards and two scores.

National team head coach Rachel Lessard praised Parker’s competitive drive and work ethic, noting that a past roster decision only intensified the quarterback’s dedication. Last year, Canada left Parker off the roster for a national team camp in Los Angeles in favor of another option. Rather than retreating, Parker pressed the coaching staff for tactical clarity.

“Last year, we didn’t bring Sara to L.A. (for national team camp),” Lessard said. “We took another quarterback we felt was more in position to help us win. But we created a beast because Sara challenged my OC and wanted to understand. After every practice she wanted to know what she could do to get better.”

Parker continues to refine her mechanics outside of national team windows by training with Myles Gibbon, founder and head coach of The QB Movement, which operates training programs in Toronto and Montreal.

A Deep-Rooted Football Journey and Grassroots Impact

Parker’s path to the international stage spans 13 years, starting when she picked up the sport at age 13 to stay active during the spring season following ringette, field hockey, and basketball. Raised in a non-football household by a mother who played softball, Parker learned the fundamentals of throwing a football in front of their home.

Beyond her play on the field, Parker has built programs from the ground up across high school, CEGEP, and Concordia University. In addition to playing, she has shouldered operational duties including team president, general manager, equipment manager, athletic therapist, and uniform designer alongside her mother.

Her efforts at Champlain College Saint Lambert earned her an induction into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2025 after the flag program she helped launch went unbeaten in its inaugural season and earned a promotion from the fourth division to the top tier. When pandemic lockdowns shuttered campuses in 2020, Parker laid the groundwork for a Quebec-based university flag football league that launched in 2021. Women’s flag football is set to become a pilot sport in U Sports starting in 2027.
