The Yankees will officially add Elmer Rodríguez to their 26-man roster Tuesday, with the 22-year-old right-hander set to make his major league debut Wednesday afternoon against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field in Arlington. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. ET (18:05 UTC).

Rodríguez’s promotion fills the rotation spot vacated Sunday when the Yankees optioned 2024 American League Rookie of the Year Luis Gil to Triple-A after a rough outing against the Houston Astros. “Elmer’s earned this opportunity,” Boone told reporters Monday. “He’s been dominant at Triple-A, and we’re excited to see what he can do at the big-league level.”

The Yankees will also recall infielder Max Schuemann from Triple-A as the corresponding move for Giancarlo Stanton, who landed on the injured list with a right calf strain. Schuemann, acquired from the Oakland Athletics in March, has hit .203 with a home run in 19 games for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season.

Why Now? The Yankees’ Rotation Shuffle

Rodríguez’s call-up comes at a pivotal moment for the Yankees’ pitching staff. With Carlos Rodón expected to return from his rehab assignment May 10, the Yankees are treating Rodríguez’s promotion as a short-term audition rather than a permanent addition.

According to The Athletic, Rodríguez is likely to make two starts before returning to the minors. This approach allows the Yankees to evaluate him without disrupting the long-term rotation plans.

The team had other options to fill the rotation spot, including Ryan Yarbrough and Paul Blackburn, but chose Rodríguez to avoid burning both long relievers in the same series. Yarbrough, who has starting experience, is currently limited to around 40 pitches per outing, while Blackburn can provide slightly more length.

“We wanted to give Elmer a real look,” a league source told The Athletic. “He’s someone who could factor into our rotation later in the season, and this gives us a chance to see him against big-league hitters.”

Who Is Elmer Rodríguez?

Elmer Javier Rodríguez was born August 18, 2003, in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, and attended Leadership Christian Academy in Guaynabo. The Boston Red Sox selected him in the fourth round (105th overall) of the 2021 MLB Draft, and he quickly established himself as one of the organization’s top pitching prospects.

The Yankees acquired Rodríguez in December 2024 in a trade that sent catcher Carlos Narváez to Boston. At the time, he was ranked as the Red Sox’s No. 12 prospect by MLB Pipeline. Since joining the Yankees, he’s climbed to No. 3 in their system and No. 72 overall in baseball.

Last season, Rodríguez posted an 11-8 record with a 2.58 ERA in 27 games (26 starts) across three levels of the Yankees’ minor-league system. He struck out 161 batters in 143 innings while walking just 42.

Rodríguez’s performance this season has been even more impressive. Through four starts at Triple-A, he’s allowed just three earned runs in 21.1 innings, striking out 20 while walking seven. Opponents are hitting just .171 against him.

Scouting Report: What Makes Rodríguez Special

Rodríguez’s arsenal is built around a power fastball that sits in the mid-90s and touches 99 mph. His primary secondary pitch is an 82-85 mph slider that has generated a 45% whiff rate in the minors this season, according to data from MiLB.com.

He also mixes in:

• A curveball in the upper 70s with sharp 12-6 break
• A splitter/changeup in the upper 80s that induces weak contact

“He has the stuff to be a frontline starter,” said one American League scout who has seen Rodríguez pitch this season. “The fastball plays up because of the angle he creates, and the slider is a true swing-and-miss pitch. If he can command the changeup, he’ll be a rotation anchor for years.”

Rodríguez’s command has been a strength throughout his minor-league career. He’s walked just 2.6 batters per nine innings in 354.2 career innings, a rate that would rank among the best in the majors if he maintained it at the big-league level.

What This Means for the Yankees

Rodríguez’s debut comes at a critical juncture for the Yankees, who entered Tuesday’s action with a 14-12 record, great for second place in the AL East, 1.5 games behind the Baltimore Orioles.

The rotation has been a question mark early in the season. Gerrit Cole, the 2023 AL Cy Young winner, has struggled in his first four starts, posting a 5.40 ERA. Nestor Cortes has been solid (3.21 ERA in four starts), but the back finish of the rotation has been inconsistent.

Rodríguez’s promotion gives the Yankees a chance to evaluate a potential long-term piece while also providing a spark for a team that has lost three of its last four series. If he pitches well in his two starts, he could force the Yankees to reconsider their rotation plans, especially if injuries or ineffectiveness continue to plague the staff.

What’s Next for Rodríguez

Rodríguez is expected to start Wednesday’s series finale against the Rangers. If all goes according to plan, he’ll make a second start during the Yankees’ upcoming homestand against the Orioles before returning to Triple-A when Carlos Rodón is activated.

The Yankees have not announced a specific date for Rodríguez’s second start, but it will likely reach during the May 2-5 series against Baltimore at Yankee Stadium.
