Jille and Wassink Exit European Badminton Championships in Huelva Quarterfinals
The campaign for Dutch mixed doubles pair Debora Jille and Brian Wassink has reach to an conclude at the European Badminton Championships 2026 in Huelva, Spain. After a strong run to the final eight, the duo was eliminated in the quarterfinals by England’s Callum Hemming and Estelle van Leeuwen.
The defeat came in two sets, marking the conclusion of a promising tournament for the pair who had entered the quarterfinals with significant momentum. Whereas the loss ends their bid for a podium finish in the mixed doubles category, their performance provided a highlight for the Dutch contingent in Huelva.
The Road to the Quarterfinals
Jille and Wassink reached the quarterfinals after a convincing victory in the second round. Facing the German duo of Simon Krax and Amelie Lehmann, the “Oranje” pair dominated the match, securing a straight-sets win with scores of 21-13 and 21-16.
That victory set the stage for their Thursday clash against the English pair, Hemming and van Leeuwen. Despite the early success, the Dutch pair could not overcome the English duo’s defense, falling in two sets to exit the competition.
A Challenging Tournament for the Dutch Squad
For Debora Jille, the tournament involved a demanding schedule across multiple disciplines. In addition to her mixed doubles run, Jille competed in the women’s doubles alongside German partner Isabel Lohau. Their journey ended in the second round after a match against the top-seeded Bulgarian sisters, Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva. The multi-time European champions proved too strong, defeating Jille and Lohau 21-13, 21-14.
The struggle continued for other Dutch representatives in the women’s doubles. Kirsten de Wit and Meerte Loos also saw their tournament end in the second round. They faced the third-seeded Ukrainian pair, Polina Buhrova and Yevheniia Kantemyr, falling 21-10 and 21-17.
Earlier in the week, Kelly van Buiten and Aline Muller (Switzerland) were eliminated in the first round by Denmark’s Laerke Hvid and Anna Klausholm.
Singles Struggle in Huelva
The results in the singles category were equally sobering for the Netherlands. Noah Haase was eliminated in the opening round of the men’s singles event. Haase struggled to find a rhythm against Poland’s Dominik Kwinta, ultimately losing the match 21-12, 21-13.
With the exit of Jille and Wassink, the primary hopes for a Dutch breakthrough at the 2026 championships have faded, leaving the team to analyze the gaps between their performance and the top European seeds.
