Colombia Dominates Archery to Fight for Podium at 2023 South American Youth Games in Panamá

Colombia secured a dominant performance in archery at the 2026 South American Youth Games in Panama City, capturing 11 medals across individual and team events. The delegation finished with four gold, two silver, and five bronze medals, establishing itself as the top-performing nation in the sport during the competition.

According to verified results from the Ministry of Sport, Colombian archers excelled in both recurve and compound disciplines. Juan González claimed gold in the individual compound event, whereas Jerónimo Agudelo earned silver in the same category. The women’s compound team of Julieta Tobón and Karina Arango took gold, as did the recurve duo of Juana Cardona and Salomé Duque.

In mixed team events, Colombia secured gold in compound mixed team with Karina Arango, Jerónimo Agudelo, Juan González, and Julieta Tobón. The recurve mixed team of Juana Cardona, Nicolás Gómez, Cristóbal Giraldo, and Salomé Duque earned bronze. Additional bronze medals came from Nicolás Gómez in individual recurve men’s, Juana Cardona in individual recurve women’s, and Karina Arango in individual compound women’s.

Team events as well yielded strong results: the compound men’s pair of González and Agudelo took silver, while Cristóbal Giraldo and Nicolás Gómez earned bronze in recurve men’s pairs. The recurve women’s pair of Cardona and Duque had already secured gold, completing a clean sweep in that category.

Coach Dairon Jaramillo Alzate praised the athletes’ resilience, noting they adapted well to challenging weather conditions. “The kids had a positive experience, showed quality behavior, faced the weather conditions, and achieved good results,” he said. Jerónimo Agudelo echoed this sentiment, highlighting the value of competing under pressure: “The competition was tough, the wind was impressive, but we overcame it. These events help us handle pressure and prepare for future competitions.”

The archery success contributed significantly to Colombia’s overall standing in the Games. As of April 21, 2026, the nation ranked fourth in the medal table with 46 total medals (10 gold, 10 silver, 26 bronze), behind Brazil, Argentina, and Venezuela. Archery remained Colombia’s most successful sport, accounting for nearly a quarter of its total medal haul.

Competitions took place at the Irving Saladino Sports City venue in Panama City, the designated site for archery events during the 2026 South American Youth Games. The facility hosted daily competitions from April 12 to April 19, 2026, with archery concluding on the final full day of competition.

With the archery events complete, Colombia shifted focus to remaining sports including golf, tennis, badminton, taekwondo, and baseball during the final days of the Games. The archery team’s performance has been cited as a benchmark for youth development programs within the Colombian Archery Federation.

Looking ahead, the next major checkpoint for Colombian archery is the continental qualifying circuit for the 2027 Pan American Games, with selection events expected to begin in late 2026. Fans can follow updates through the official channels of the Colombian Olympic Committee and World Archery Americas.

What stands out from Colombia’s archery campaign in Panama is not just the medal count, but the breadth of success across genders, disciplines, and event types — signaling a deep and well-coordinated development system. For now, the focus turns to celebrating a historic achievement while preparing the next generation for continental and global challenges.
