Baseball Club Cairese Kicks Off Under 12 Campaign with Strategic Shift to Piedmontese League

CAIRO MONTENOTTE, Italy — The Baseball Club Cairese opened its regional Under 12 championship season on Saturday, April 11, hosting an opening day that signaled a modern competitive direction for the organization. In a move designed to accelerate player development, the Cairese—alongside Sanremo—requested and received approval to compete in one of the two Piedmontese groups for the 2026 season, rather than staying within a strictly Ligurian circuit.

The decision to move into the Piedmontese league stems from a desire to expose the young athletes to a wider variety of opponents and more frequent high-level competition. For a club that prides itself on growth, this strategic shift provides the Under 12 roster with the necessary challenges to evolve their game throughout the spring and summer.

A Testing Debut Against JFK Mondovì

The opening match pitted the Cairese against JFK Mondovì, a program that has seen significant growth in recent years, including the ascent of its first team into Serie B and the establishment of a robust youth academy. The encounter served as a litmus test for the Cairese’s readiness for the more rigorous Piedmontese competition.

Manager Stefano Bellino set his lineup with Leonardo Ghione taking the mound as the starting pitcher, supported by Samuele Pioppo behind the plate as catcher. The infield was anchored by Matteo Quattrocchi, Margerita Malatesta, Lorenzo Cavalaro, and Augusto Moraes, while the outfield featured Giacomo Maio, Nicolò Veglia, and Tommaso Canova.

The preparation for this outdoor season began months ago. In February, the club’s two Under 12 teams—the Lions and the Tigers—competed in the Western League. This indoor winter championship, held in gymnasiums (palazzetti) such as the one in Avigliana, serves as the foundational training phase before players transition to the grass and dirt of the outdoor fields.

By integrating indoor winter leagues, a diversified regional schedule, and a dual-game weekend format, the Baseball Club Cairese is positioning its youth academy to be more than just a local participant, but a developmental powerhouse in Northern Italy.
