Vigolo, Italy – The community of Vigolo is mourning the loss of Mariaclara Beltrachini, a 32-year-old judo instructor and mother who passed away on Tuesday evening after a battle with a rare form of cancer. Beltrachini’s story, marked by courage and a dedication to her community, resonated deeply with those who knew her, and her passing leaves a void in the small town nestled on the shores of Lake Iseo.
Beltrachini’s journey took a difficult turn shortly after the birth of her son, Ethan, in March of last year. What should have been a time of joy was instead overshadowed by a diagnosis of fibrolamellar carcinoma, a rare and often asymptomatic cancer that primarily affects young people with healthy livers. As her husband, Jason Ruggeri, recounted, the diagnosis came as a shock, transforming a perfect beginning into a challenging fight for survival.
Born and raised with a connection to Vigolo through her grandparents and parents, Mariaclara officially became a resident of the town in 2017, a moment she celebrated with then-Mayor Gabriele Gori. “She told me, ‘Mayor, I have fulfilled my dream of becoming a citizen of Vigolo,’” Gori recalled in a social media post expressing his grief. That sense of belonging and commitment to the community defined her life in Vigolo.
Beltrachini’s passion for judo, instilled by her father Angelo, a prominent judo instructor in Milan, led her to share her knowledge with others. She taught judo to children and teenagers at the local polisportiva, and likewise offered gymnastics classes for adults. Her dedication extended to volunteering at local events like the August sagra and Passeggiarmangiando, and she was also a member of the local Civil Protection agency.
The Italian Judo Federation (FIJLKAM Lombardia) publicly expressed its condolences, recognizing Beltrachini as a former athlete and dedicated instructor who continued to promote the sport after moving to the Lake Iseo area. “In the last year, she was an example to all of strength, tenacity, and determination in her fight against illness, which never affected her free and vital spirit,” the federation stated. Mayor Gori highlighted Beltrachini’s deep integration into the Vigolo community, emphasizing that she wasn’t simply a resident but an active participant in local life. “She always proposed and participated in many volunteer activities with the groups and associations in our town,” Gori said. “We are all deeply saddened by her passing.”
Beltrachini faced her illness with remarkable courage, according to her father, Angelo. “She faced the disease as she faced the fights – openly and with all the strength she had,” he said. “Until the last, she tried to convey her strength and serenity to us: even when the test results were not favorable, she was the first to tell us that the next tests would be better.”
The diagnosis came shortly after Ethan’s birth, and despite initial hope, the cancer returned aggressively. Mariaclara herself shared her story publicly in May of last year, acknowledging the shock of the diagnosis and expressing gratitude for the “miracle” of her son’s birth, which led to its discovery. She wrote, “If I hadn’t been born, no one would have noticed.”
Mariaclara Beltrachini is survived by her husband, Jason Ruggeri, her son Ethan, her mother Silvia, her father Angelo, and her brother Andrea. Her funeral will be held on Friday, March 13th, at 2:30 PM at the parish church of Vigolo.
