Vingegaard Wins Volta a Catalunya 2026: Gilmore Takes Final Stage | Cycling News

Vingegaard Seals Volta a Catalunya Victory as Gilmore Grabs Final Stage

Barcelona, Spain – Jonas Vingegaard of Team Visma | Lease a Bike secured the overall title at the Volta a Catalunya on Sunday, following the completion of the seventh and final stage. The stage itself was won in a sprint finish in Barcelona by Australian rider Brady Gilmore, representing NSN Cycling Team.

The victory marks a strong start to the season for Vingegaard, who finished second in the Tour de France in both 2024 and 2025, and adds a significant trophy to his palmarès. He bested Frenchman Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious) by 1 minute and 22 seconds, with German Florian Lipowitz (RedBull-Bora-Hansgrohe) rounding out the podium, 1 minute and 30 seconds back.

Vingegaard’s triumph comes just two weeks after his victory at Paris-Nice, solidifying his position as a dominant force in stage racing. He succeeds Slovenian Primoz Roglic as the Volta a Catalunya champion.

“Today I was mostly focused on the general classification and not on a stage win,” Vingegaard explained after the race. “The Red Bull – Bora – Hansgrohe riders did a decent job trying to isolate me before attacking, but fortunately I was able to defend my position.” He continued, “It’s been a really great week. We came here with the ambition to win stages and the general classification, and we’ve succeeded. I’m absolutely delighted with that.”

The Dane cemented his overall lead with impressive stage wins on both Friday and Saturday, showcasing his climbing prowess. He took the lead in the general classification on Friday with an impressive win on the first mountain top finish, and followed that up with a solo victory on Saturday.

Sunday’s final stage, a 95.1km rolling course around Barcelona featuring seven ascents of the Montjuïc hill, culminated in a bunch sprint. Gilmore, 24, of NSN Cycling Team, emerged victorious, marking his first win in a World Tour event. He edged out French sprinter Dorion Godon (Ineos Grenadiers), who had previously won stages 1 and 3 of this year’s Volta a Catalunya, and Belgian Remco Evenepoel (RedBull-Bora-Hansgrohe).

The sprint finish saw Godon initially well-positioned thanks to the work of his teammate, Oscar Onley, but Gilmore ultimately timed his move perfectly, capitalizing on the draft to take the stage win.

Vingegaard’s performance at the Volta a Catalunya further solidifies his status as the overwhelming favorite for the upcoming Giro d’Italia, where he will make his debut in May. The double Tour de France champion appears to be in peak form as he prepares for the Italian Grand Tour. He has been a consistent performer in recent years, winning the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023, and finishing second in the Tour of Spain in 2023.

The Volta a Catalunya is a prestigious stage race known for its challenging terrain and attracts many of the world’s top cyclists. The race serves as an important early-season test for riders preparing for the major Grand Tours.

Jonas Vingegaard’s contract with Team Visma | Lease a Bike extends through 2028, according to team information. He was born on December 10, 1996, and is currently 29 years old. He originally joined the team in 2019 and quickly demonstrated his potential, winning a stage at the Tour de Pologne in his first year as a professional.

With the Volta a Catalunya now in the books, Vingegaard will undoubtedly turn his attention to the Giro d’Italia, where he will be looking to add another Grand Tour title to his impressive resume. The cycling world will be watching closely to see if he can continue his winning form in Italy.

Next up for Vingegaard is the Giro d’Italia, beginning May 9th. The race will provide a stern test of his form and a chance to add another major title to his collection.
