Kansas City, MO – In a turn of events that has captivated NFL fans and sparked considerable discussion, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is reportedly set to return for his 14th season with the team. After weeks of speculation surrounding his potential retirement, NFL Network reported that Kelce and the Chiefs have reached an agreement, though the contract has not yet been officially signed.
The news comes as a welcome development for Chiefs fans, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding the team’s quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, who is recovering from a torn ACL. Kelce’s continued presence provides a crucial element of stability and experience as the team navigates the upcoming season.
Kelce, a cornerstone of the Chiefs’ offense since being drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL draft, has become one of the most decorated tight ends in league history. He has won three Super Bowl titles with Kansas City – Super Bowl LIV, LVII, and LVIII – and has been named a First-Team All-Pro four times (2016, 2018, 2020, 2022). He also boasts 11 Pro Bowl selections (2015-2025) and holds several NFL records for a tight end, including career postseason receptions (174) and postseason receiving yards (2,039), as of 2025.
The decision is particularly noteworthy as Kelce had recently indicated he was weighing all options, including potentially stepping away from the game. Reports suggested he was considering offers from other teams, but ultimately chose to remain with the Chiefs. This loyalty is further highlighted by the fact that he has played his entire NFL career in Kansas City.
Adding to the intrigue surrounding Kelce’s decision is his relationship with pop superstar Taylor Swift. Swift was present at numerous Chiefs games throughout the 2023-2024 season, bringing unprecedented attention to the NFL. The couple’s relationship has been a constant topic of media coverage, and Kelce’s return ensures their connection will continue to be a focal point as the new season approaches. Swift recently received the “Most Powerful International Singer or Group” award at the 2026 Power Music Awards in Turkey, marking her first win from the country.
The Chiefs aren’t just focused on retaining key players; they are also looking to bolster their roster. Reports indicate the team is also pursuing Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III, who was named the Super Bowl MVP this year. Adding Walker to the backfield would provide a significant boost to the Chiefs’ offensive attack.
Kelce’s initial contemplation of retirement stemmed, in part, from the Chiefs’ disappointing playoff exit last season – their first since 2014. The team struggled to discover consistency without a fully healthy Mahomes, and Kelce acknowledged the require to carefully consider his future. He stated after the Chiefs’ final home game on December 26th that he would make a decision “together with my family, my friends and the Chiefs organization.”
The tight end’s return is a significant boost for a Chiefs team looking to rebound from a challenging season. With Mahomes’ recovery progressing and Kelce back in the fold, Kansas City will undoubtedly be a contender in the AFC once again. The team will be looking to return to championship form, and Kelce’s experience and playmaking ability will be vital to their success.
The NFL season is scheduled to begin in September. The Chiefs’ full schedule will be released in the coming months, and fans will be eager to see when Kelce and the team will take the field. The anticipation is already building for what promises to be another exciting season in Kansas City.
As Kelce prepares for his 14th season, he continues to cement his legacy as one of the greatest tight ends to ever play the game. His dedication to the Chiefs and his commitment to excellence will undoubtedly inspire his teammates and fans alike.
The next key date for the Kansas City Chiefs will be the official announcement of Kelce’s contract and the release of the full 2026 NFL schedule. Fans can stay updated on the latest news and developments by visiting the team’s official website and following their social media channels.
